broken rib???

Someone tell me how I could notice every single tag in my shirts, the

seams of my shirts and socks, the feel of my pants on my legs.... but

not notice I have broken a rib until 11 MONTHS later???? That's what

my doc thinks it is. I fell last winter and did land on that side.

What I remember at the time was that I wondered if I cracked my

forearm (and never bothered to go get that x-rayed, either). It must

have hurt enough that I didn't notice the rib. So... I had an X-ray

and will have the results tomorrow or the next day. I think maybe it

has started hurting because I don't get enough exercise and so my side

has stiffened up a bit. Anyway, I am NOT worried about it and

hopefully that's what the x-ray will show. I am SUCH a pain weenie

though, that I would think I would have noticed SOMETHING.

Probably the same way I went for two weeks without knowing my fibular was

broken! I fell down a little hill in my backyard a month and a half ago and

instantly knew I had hurt both feet [heard the snap, crackle and pop].

However, it really did not hurt that much. At least not to me. I described

what I was feeling as " sore " . After limping around for two weeks, my left

leg remained very sore up the side, so my husband told me to get it checked

out.

The doctor sent me to get x-rayed and the tech had me walk across the

building to the machine. After she took the x-rays she came back with a

wheelchair and said I was not going to walk on that leg anymore! I wondered

why she made me walk in the first place. Then I thought maybe because I

wasn't showing a lot of pain, she didn't think it was really broken?

Anyway, it was, right in the place where I felt the soreness. They put me in

a boot thing for my left leg and a splint for my right [which was sprained].

My friend Becky who came over right after I fell couldn't get over that I

was not yelling and screaming. She had sprained her foot a year ago and she

said she screamed all over the place. I told her it didn't hurt that bad.

She told me I must have high pain tolerance.

Thing is, when I *am* in what I consider a lot of pain, I am still not one

to really emote about it. I just don't. Not sure why.

Take care,

Gail :-)

It's not broken. The x-ray did not show anything. One thing the doctor

told me to do was to stretch from side to side. The very first time I

stretched, I felt something like a big rip and thought " Uh-oh. " So I

did just that one stretch one time and then decided to sleep on it to

see how I'd get through the night (nights were the worst). Funny

thing. I have had NO pain since I " ripped " my side. Maybe it was some

scar tissue adhering to my ribs. I have no idea. I went from barely

being able to sleep on that side to no pain at all. So.... that wasn't

very interesting after all. Which is probably a good thing!

Meanwhile I am whacking away at my shirt tags. I HATE the ones that

are in the side of the shirt, right at my lower ribs. They usually

tell how to wash the garment or something. They poke me in the ribs

and I leap up and go on a hunt for the scissors.

I cracked my arm once and had a stress fracture in my leg, and didn't realize

either had happened. With my arm, I'd gotten it X-rayed, but I messed up and

said it was my wrist (because it was the side of my arm really close), and they

didn't see anything. Then three weeks later I could feel something shifting

around (too gross) and so I went back and got it X-rayed, and they told me it

was cracked.

With my leg it felt sore, but I thought I'd just pulled a muscle. When the

doctor told me I had a hairline fracture I was in shock.

I think my head is broken *cheeky grin*

Seriously though, that sounds like the result of no

exercise/stretching and then muscle spasms maybe as a result - I've

had muscle spasms in my back that drop me to the floor.

Hang in there Rhonda! :)
