I had the flu last winter & it took me nearly 3 months to get over it. Your congestion may have been caused by a virus (are you talking about a cold?) but if fever is present it could mean antibiotics may be necessary to prevent secondary infection. My doctor always gives antibiotics if I get chesty with a cold or flu which is accompanied by a fever, as Im vulnerable to bronchitis, pneumonia because of my battered immune system. So,in answer to your question, unfortunately yes it can take longer to recover. Guest guest Posted February 28, 2003 Report Share Posted February 28, 2003 Steve...it's not the AIH that makes it harder to rid yourself of viruses and such, but rather the immunosuppressants you are most likely taking... not much you can do but ride it out and lisen to your doc. Every one in my family got an 18 hr stomach virus right around Thanksgiving, including me, except my 18 hrs, lasted 5 days. It hangs on for a couple weeks. are you coughing? the last lady I saw was coughing pretty bad. I stayed away from her but had to be at the dentist. She said she no longer had a fever after a week. I was told not to take Tylenol because of the acetaminophen, and not to take antibiotics with Pred. So, I end up drinking a lot of water to clear the congestions and headaches. He coughed and hacked for weeks. He was still coughing at the end of January. Oddly, I never picked it up. My daughters did, but I didn't. Guess the good lord decided to spare me that time. Guess he decided I had enough on my plate at the time. Have you picked it up? I have some weird glandular thing going on myself. Lymph nodes are swollen in my neck - to the point I am having trouble even using my right arm. It just snuck up on me yesterday. The heavy soreness now goes all the way down my back. Was going to try to see my GP today, then remembered I don't like her! Guess if it gets worse or is still here Monday I will drag myself into the walk in clinic at least. Hope you are feeling o.k. My husband had a liver tx 4 years ago and has never had a rejection episode. However, he now has a post transplant lymphoproliverative disorder. Because of his tx, they have only been able to do needle biopsies through the back because of the dangers associated with going through the abdomen to get larger samples. He recently was getting sicker and sicker, wasn't eating and ended up with a toxic level of Prograf (his immunosuppressent) which through him into renal failure. Kidneys working again but he cannot sustain his blood pressure without meds and has sepsis and fevers. So far, no bacteria has developed that they can identify as the source of infection. He has the antibodies of CMV, but it is not active. Here's my question, have any of you had other viruses other than flu that have presented like this? Since we can't find a bacteria, I'm thinking it has to be some hidden virus that is causing the sepsis. By the way, the liver is holding up well so far and he's been taken off all immunosuppresents at this time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. You might want to see if your dr. would be willign to do that. Sometimes we just need a little boost to help us get rid of it! Patty D. Guest guest Posted March 1, 2003 Report Share Posted March 1, 2003 Sharon, I had something like that last year, it took me six weeks to get over, I tried to see a doctor at my HMO and they said it was probably just a virus, I told them that I had asthma and that I had sharp pains when I breathed, anyway I ended up having pneumonia and it left a lobe of my lungs deflated, so now I have to be even more careful. Thanks for the heads up about the congestive thing in our part of the country. How's the weather like today for you Sharon? We are having a little sun with rain. We also are lambing at our farm, we have three new lambs, all ewes, (girls) and they are adorable. They are running and playing and are entertaining us with their cute antics!! Fever it the bodies way of fighting an illness. If it isn't over 102 our ped says leave it be and let the bodies natural protections do their job Just at thought---cool compresses can help if she is really uncomfortable, fluids and taking the antibiotics which will fight the infection. These bugs are getting harder to kill. I am sick sick sick again and did this same thing in June and again in December. Ugh!
