a new drug and some alarming side effects

The RNs in home health thought my MIL might have a bit of a thrush infection

in her mouth and asked her doctor for Nystatin rinse. Today the RN came out

to show me how to administer it. Here it is about an hour and a half later,

RN has gone and my MIL is not feeling well.

She started asking where she was supposed to stand. She thought she was

outside and a lot of people were outside there too, standing in the rain,

where is she supposed to stand. Then she cried, " Oh my head hurts " . So I

think ok, headache is a list of possible side effects with this stuff. I

talk with her and she seems confused and she TELLS me she's confused, "

Something's wrong with my head " and then tells me she feels sick to her

stomach. Eventually I suggested to my mil that the new medicine could be

making her feel confused and also give her a headache and if she wanted to

lie down and not eat lunch that's ok. She now she is lying down. I have

her resting quietly, she seems to be glad to be lying down. But she is also

clutching her hands together - a sure sign of anxiety. She might be picking

that up from me too, I'm feeling a bit anxious about whether this will get

better, etc. I sensed she was near panic earlier and I was sure to be calm

and reassuring to her and hope it helped and hope it continues to help.

I am supposed to give this to her 4 x daily and I don't want to do this

again at all. I remember having this myself before and it caused me a bad

headache, dizziness and nausea. But for my MIL the effects are going into

hallucinations and frightening her and she is behaving like she does not

know what exactly to trust. She was afraid to eat or drink anything but I

talked to her and told her these things were ok so then she accepted. When

she was lying down she broke down into tears telling the caregiver she loves

her.

Has anyone else had experience like this with Nystatin rinse? Any

suggestions other than let it get out of her system and hope for the best?

I put a call in to home health and notified them and am waiting for a call

back.

On top of this, her doctor Rx'd a new antibiotic for uti prevention -

Nirtofuran MCR 50 mg one every night. Well reading the list of side effects

that comes from the pharmacy, they include: depression, restlessness,

sleepiness, dizziness, confusion, headache, nausea, mood disorders.. I am

not inclined to want to try this with my MIL because she is so sensitive to

things. I'm certainly not going to try it going into a weekend. Any

thoughts?

My father definitely had a bad reaction to an antibiotic. It was cephalexin and

keflex. It really left him confused and it took several days to pass through

his system. I'm starting to think that LBD sufferers have bad reactions to

many meds.
