I got a 29....mostly the social questions got me. I don't like being around

people very much and do not make friends easily. Go figure! LOL!!!

Good point Raena. I think a lot of social discomfort is something

that might accompany having a child that tears the wallpaper off

of your friends' homes or throws themself on the floor of the

grocery store screaming at age 5...heh.

That being said, I don't think it was the social questions that

bumped up my score as much as the memory/numbers/detail-

oriented thinking questions. I'm not so much anti-social as

socially clueless a lot of times; I have a very difficult time

discerning people's intentions and am waaaaaaay too trusting

of strangers.

Duh; I'm a computer programmer for a reason...lol.

Well, I do have a good memory and a pretty good memory for numbers or I'd be

REALLY low. But I am very social. I remember one day I was in a bad mood

and it must have been a while ago because Enrique was in the car with me. I

was ordering something from Mc's and chatting with the person at the

drive-thru window made me cheerful again. Enrique said, " HOW can talking to

some complete stranger for a minute or two put you in a good mood? " I don't

know, but it does.

I'm not so much anti-social as

I can be too trusting sometimes I suppose because I like people and want to

think the best of them. But I would tell Lou things about people and he

would say, " How can you know that? " He thought I could read minds and

liking people and paying attention to them. I like small conversations, I

like talking to groups, I like public speaking, I like social chitchat and I

like serious conversations.

What's wrong with a 32? Eighty percent of people with autism or relatives

of people with autism scored 32 or higher. So what? We all know the genes

are there or we wouldn't have the kids we have.

Enrique only got a 31. That was nice.

Did you notice there was no sensory stuff?

This is true, I suppose, and especially true of those who may have problems

with depression. Depression would certainly take the enjoyment off most

social situations. In that case, considering the total insanity of my

current circumstances, what would I score in a more sane situation? Minus

2?

So, in other words, Jacquie...

I am merely the very social version of you. LOL

OK - it's clear now. That test was really geared towards social oddities,

I noticed.... so it's no wonder you scored that much higher than me. Have

you ever scored yourself on the ATEC?

Then again... I guess THAT test is not really geared to adults either....

hmmmmmmmmmm again. <good observation, !!!>

There were so many....the ones that spring to memory immediately: I hate

meeting new people. I hate social situations. I hear small noises that

nobody else is bothered by. I obsessively collect information. I have no

idea what other people's intentions are (I remember saying to marc once,

when someone kept calling me all friendly-like, " what does she WANT from

me? " I also have had several male 'friends' in my life who shocked and hurt

me deeply by trying to ram their tongues down my throat -- I NEVER, NEVER

knew that was underlying the 'friendship'). I can remember any telephone

number given to me anytime anywhere. I would rather be alone that with

other people. I prefer things to people (I based that answer on that I

would rather shelve the books at the library than talk to the other library

employees). I prefer a library to a party.

The list goes on, of course, but I can't remember it all!

Sue:

He is probably right. I sent it to an NT mother's list and some of them are

finding high-ish scores and sounding worried.

Some of them are making kind of good cases too, but still such a test is NOT

a true dx of anything. And it is all very subjective too.

Me too, Salli.

I had to answer yes to some of the number questions. I don't have an

obsession with numbers, but I memorize most phone numbers if someone says it

to me, or if I see it in writing. It's become a lot less so since

motherhood with a mommy brain, but if and when I pay attention - - it's

still there.

That happens to me too. I laugh at myself. The smallest, most meaningless

social situation has an uncanny way of making me go back to high mode. That

is also why I believe that being friendly and kind in public is sometimes as

good as helping other people out in more tangible ways. You never know

whose day you made by just saying a nice word or two. I know it has

happened to me before.

Then I feel so sorry for myself. Sheesh, Grace.... how desperately did you

want conversation that the small chat with the cashier put you back in a

good mood? LOL!!

Interestingly enough, when people used to pose to us that question 'why did you

get married' or 'how did you know you were the ones for each other', our

standard response was, " Of all the people we've met in the world, we hate each

other the least. "

We do stick together through behaviours that our friends say, " Why didn't you

kill him/her???? I could NEVER blah blah blah... " It does seem that we have a

unique understanding and different standards of forgiveness than our friends.

(the very few we have)

OK I got 25 is that good or bad.

Ron:

31 is irrelevant. It's good; it's bad. It depends on what you do with your

31. It does happen to be Enrique's score, but obviously you are functioning

better than Enrique. The test is NOT a dx; it merely notes certain social

traits that are more common among people with autism and family members of

people with autism than the non-autistic control group. You have family

members with autism so your score is not at all surprising. You're fine,

Ron.
