My thought is most children triple their weight by the first birthday. If they have already tripled their weight then maybe they don't have as much fast growing so waiting may not be the best idea. For example, na is the weight and length of an average 9 month old but she is not yet 7 months. So maybe her growth patterns act more like a 9 month old (she has slowed down a lot since October). So, maybe he figure repositioning just wasn't gong to be enough.

Does that make any sense? Just ignore me if it doesn't : )

Maybe its a stupid question-- but what does weight gain have to do with it?For more plagio info

Hi Melisa,

That is going to be a drive for you - isn't it? I am in Valencia. Well near enough to Valencia. I go to Burbank/ N. Hollywood.

My son was 6 months when he was banded and he had no problem adjusting to sleeping. Oops I am late for his ortho!

New Here - First post

Hi,I'm new here. We met with a cranial plastic surgeon yesterday and were told my son needed to get a helmet. The dr. seemed to think his condition is mild. It seemed like at first he was going to say he didn't need one but when he heard he had already tripled his weight he changed his tune. I live in Anaheim, CA and will be getting the helmet through Kaiser's facilities in Loma . I know they do not use Doc Bands and am not really sure who they use. I was told the total cost would be $1408. Our Kaiser insurance doesn't cover durable medical equipment (I think that's what it's called) but the cost isn't that bad. I certainly thought it would be more.My son is almost 6 1/2 months old. He sleeps 12-13 hours/night and naps great too. I'm worried he's going to have a hard time adjusting to wearing the helmet and that it will interfere with his sleep and make him cranky during the day. Right now he is a very happy baby. Hardly ever cranky for no reason. I also feel bad that he has to wear it and his twin sister doesn't. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy her head straightened out on it's own, It just seems weird for him to have to go through this without her. I know that sounds weird. I guess it's just hard for me to explain what I mean.BTW - I looked at some of the photos and am amazed at how fast you can see results in some of them! All the children are so beautiful. Thanks for listening. Any thoughts, advice, encouragement, information, etc. that you could give me would be greatly appreciated.MelisaAnaheim, CAMom to Isabelle & Ian - 6 months oldFor more plagio info

The doctor seemed concerned that his head would have straightened out on it's own, if it was going to, during his growth spurt. I guess since my son had already had a big growth spurt made them think that he would benefit from the helmet.

Melisa,

Hi and welcome! I'm also a mom of twins, one needing a helmet, the

other one doesn't. I understand exactly what you mean about it being weird

when one baby needs something and the other doesn't. Jordan has quite a few

medical problem in addition to the plagio so I've gotten pretty used to the

boys having different needs. In a way it has really helped me in

reinforcing that just because they are twins, they are truly individuals.

Jordan also is a great sleeper and a really, really, really happy baby and

he hasn't minded the band at all. He was wearing it 23 hours a day by the

second day and now when you take it off, he grabs for it as if to say " Hey,

put that back! " After a short while, you get really used to your baby in

the band and it just becomes another part of them and you almost forget that

others see it differently.

Good luck on beginning your plagio journey. It's not always the smoothest

road to travel but there are lots of great travel guides on this board to

help you through.

Driving to Loma will be quite a drive. I'm not looking forward to it. It sounded like that was Kaiser's closet location for me though.

Thanks for the encouragement . Picturing Jordan actually grabbing for the helmet when you take it off him makes me feel better. How much longer do you think he had left in his treatment?

Jordan has quite a ways to go in his treatment and will almost defiantly need a second band. Due to his cranio surgeries and serious tort he developed the most severe case of plagio any of his doctors have ever seen and I think the worst case I've heard of even here on the list. He started in his band with asymmetries of 39mm and is down to 29mm so he still has quite a ways to go. But on the bright side he has received 10mm correction in the 2.5 months he's been wearing the band. You can see his picture in the link below my signature. The one with his band was taken on the very first day he got it and as you can see, he was happy as a lark in it and still is.
