Guest guest
Some things there about which one can do absolutely nothing. If you suspect abuse, (this sounds like over-protection, not beatings etc.) the local agencies could help. They usually do a lot of education etc. before they ever pull kids. Sometimes kids too, for no reason go through peculiar stages growing up. At least this woman is not neglecting her kids. The only thing you can really do is to put some time and attention to your own self-care. Then, if you are feeling better about yourself you are in a much better shape to help with things - should you ever be asked. So- have a bubble bath Read something stimulating. Find out one new thing about yourself - good or bad or otherwise. Take care of BigBearBob Jo Need help saving some NT children from Asperger's I know the title sounds odd and its going to take a bit to explain so grab a drink and sit back. When I was explaining the autism spectrum to my mother I really stressed the point I did not want my aunt to know about it. This women fits munchausen, she also puts her children thru hell. We have yet to figure out a way to stop the punishment her children go through. Here are some examples of hell. One child had an alergic reaction to almonds, so she took all of her children, ages 20, 15, 4 and 2 to have loads of allergy testing, it was the 4 year old that had the problem and none of the other children had ever had a problem with any food prior. Oldest was on rideline(cant spell it, the ADHD drug) for years. He now has nervous twitches along other odd problems. The daughter is bulimic (vomits her food up). One child passed out after seeing his mother give blood, she said it was a seizure. He spent a bunch of time with various doctors including nerologists getting all kinds of testing done on him, at 3 years old. Of course they found no sign of any problems at all. She put her youngest through all kinds of testing saying that she thought he was mentally retarded, which he isnt (big surprise huh?) Every one of these children has inhalers and breathing treatments. Ok so by now you should get the idea. So my mother has a big mouth and told her. Now two months later she has found a doctor to refer her to a psychitrist for AS becuase he thinks her and all 4 of her children have it(and her brother, my uncle) She has always been all about the center of attention, goes out of her way to get it. My uncle loves his church, he preaches sometimes, is in choir, and just generally goes out of his way to be with large groups of people. Her oldest wears whatever cloths are cool, and listens to pop music as well. She thinks that because he tortures animals and feels no remorse he has it. He does like to torture animals she has the part right. He has a new girlfriend every few months. She says because of the rude things he says all the time its another sign. Of course these rude things he says are not truth but rude or cruel remarks that have no purpose beyond annoying or upsetting others. Number 2 child has bulimia, because we all know we go out of our way to look like what NTs say we should.... She is a lier, she loves to start trouble between her mother and stepfather as well as other members of our family. Number 3 is a happy child that loves to be around people. Nothing more to say really, he is about as NT as NT can get. This so called expert doctor told her that many autistics are left handed, and that his sometimes confusion of what hand to use is a sign of autism.(he is 4, uses his right hand all the time, the only confusion I see is what many small children do with crayons and whatnot with just scribling even with their none dominate hand) Only people in my entire family that are left handed other than me are on my fathers side, not my mothers, the only people in my entire family that show any signs of autism are on my fathers side as well. my fathers side is tiny, my mothers side is huge, grandfather had 4 bothers/sisters, grandmother has 12 brothers/sisters. On my fathers side both my grandparents are only children, and they only had 2 kids. Of the 10 people on my fathers side starting from grandparents down there are 4 of us that are left handed and 2 with autism. The fourth I have wondered about, he took awhile longer to talk, just over 2 before he started talking but I figured he was just lazy, as did the rest of my family beyond my aunt. He likes playing with other children and seems rather NT as well. Not to mention him, Number 3 and number 2 where dancing and what not at my wedding, while I hide in a corner away from everyone (didn't know about autism at this time, never would have gone through that hell had my wife known just how bad it was for me) These children love attention and beyond the youngest show no signs at all for any form of Autism. This supposed doctor told her that he thinks the youngest is low function. He also told her that the reason the 3rd was having seizures (you know the ones all the other doctors said he wasnt having) where because he was overloading on information. Never mind the fact he has only passed out once, it was in a small room, with 2 other people. She says the the reason her children dont understand her is because the cant compute(I think this the word she used) what she is saying. I live in quackvile, doctors here are bad, the failures that cant get a job in a big city. The chances of a doctor listening to her is rather high, even worse considering how much of Autism diagnosis comes from the input of parents. I fear she is going to have these children on unneeded medications ( and dangerous ones imo) was well as theropy they dont need and of course possibly a diagnoses that could hurt them in life(lets be fair the autism label no benifits in this twisted world of ours) As you can imagine talking with this women is impossible, she is right, everyone else is wrong unless its a doctor that agrees with her. So my question is what do I do to stop this from happening? At this point the only conclusion I have come to is that IF she manages to get a dx and put any of them through unneeded treatments of any kind I go to child services and try and have her children taken from her. This is a horrible thing to do but I cant see life away from her being any worse then what these children face if they stay with her. I know this may seem odd but I am so upset and angry I cant stop shaking and feel sick. I have to do something I just dont know what to do yet. Guest guest
Your description certainly sounds like Munchausen. If you suspect it, just like if you suspect any other form of abuse, it is your legal duty to call Child Protective Services in your state. Hopefully, the medical personnel who have been in contact with her also have called in. If they have, and nothing has been done... most states are underfunded, understaffed, and have a lack of foster care homes, so unless a kid is half-dead, they keep the kids where they are. However, by calling in, you raise their radar and increase the priority for those kids... and you never know, someone might actually do something productive with the family. It certainly sounds like she's managed to give her kids, at this point, very real, environmentally-induced dissociative, psychotic, and anxiety disorders. Perhaps the psychologist/psychiatrist route is just what this family needs. Hopefully, she's not getting together with someone incompetent who lets patients and guardians diagnose themselves without any question. Call it in to CPS; your government pages should have a phone number listed. If you give them your name, the person you call about won't know who it was, but you can get follow-up reports on their action, at least in my state. Guest guest
Hay, Talk me through this! I just finished reading Temple Grandin's book, Emergence, where she discusses being kind to cattle as they stand in line to be killed for food. From her description, it clearly does make a difference to them, if only for a few moments. part of her argument in the book was that if I had a relative who were dying, I would still treat that person well, even if he or she had only a few hours or a day left. She was even more specific than I have been here. My sister was vegbetarian for years. I admit to eating meat, but doubt that i would be able to actually kill an animal for food, unless I had an incredibly compelling reason. As an environmentally consciouls person (I have taugaht environmental science), I believe that we should limit the amount of red meat we eat, because it costs more to produce in in environmental terms than it costs to grow vegetables, but I am certainly not strict about this, and do not hollar about it. I am more interested in this idea that if you comfort something, or someone, it is a good thing, even though you know you will kill it. Why? Until a few months ago, I was horrified by the vaery idea of this- as if hte comfort was a lie- as if I could never believe in a person who did such a thing. It offended my entire sense of right and wrong. Now, I realize that it is a gift when an NT tries to offer comfort when he or she knows I hurt, even if there is no help for it-- I have learned that NTs really believe that it wwill make me feel better, and therefore, bring peace- so that it will change my circumstances in a small way for the better. For the first time in my life this last Summer, I began to realize how applied feelings really are, from that perspective. While I could not feel good about reassuring a dying animal that it would be OK when I was the one who would kill it, I am finally aboe to see why NTs offer empathy first, and think about solutions only afterwards. Any comments? Come on, share a bit of ToM- mine is embryonic in this area. , self dx-ed this last Summer, will be official in about a fortnight : ~ ) Susie Barratt wrote: Hello, yes it is very wrong and thats why i'm a vegetarian coz i don't l ike it when ppl are cruel to animals. Guest guest
I think of it, like that movie from Disney's " The Lion King " We are all connected in the circle of life. " When we die, our bodies become the grass, and the antelope eat the grass, so in a way, we are all connected in the circle of life " I'm not saying I believe in reincarnation or anything weird like that, but I am saying that makes a good point. Sure we have to kill an animal for food, but animals eat us when we die, so whats the difference? we all have to survive one way or another. I'm just not in favor of, skinning animals to make fur coats or anything like that, I agree that is wrong, just for some stupid fur coat, but we as humans, NEED to eat 3 servings of protein a day in order to survive, so what choice do we have? we can't live on Fruits and vegetables alone, and we can't eat peanut butter and egg yoaks 3 times a day, well I suppose you could but then technically you'd still be killing a baby chicken to get that egg, so its still the same thing its not like if the situation were reversed, the cow wouldn't eat us, er whatever. so this whole vegetarian thing, yeah my sister is a vegetarian too, but I'm not going to watch myself die of starvation either so a cow can live. Some things are just a given. Tom > Hay, > > Talk me through this! Ummm, you just called my belief system weird? It's no weirder than worshipping a jealous god! Genyin, Buddhist nun -- " I know the answer! The answer lies within the heart of all mankind! I just finished reading Temple Grandin ... > While I could not feel good about reassuring a dying animal > that it would be OK when I was the one who would kill it, > I am finally aboe to see why NTs offer empathy first I don't believe that is T.G.'s approach. Her approach is two-fold: 1. It is a goal to provide a good environment for farm animals. 2. Since we have made a decision to slaughter farm animals, we should do so in a humane manner, meaning not make the handling a frightening and stressful event. Neither event suggests reassuring a dying animal. It involves not causing stress on the animal by avoiding causing fear. A contrary view, from Jim Sinclair, is here: http://web.syr.edu/%7Ejisincla/killing.htm Being in the position of reassuring a dying animal that it would be (almost) okay while being the one who would kill him is quite a different matter. Actually, it is more of, " I can't make it better for you. This is the best I can do. " (Again, it is quite different from the concept of NTs offering empathy first.) - s ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ in 2008 primaries ... too deceptive. too scripted. too disingenuous. not electable. (Repeating that candidate's name would be redundant.)
Guest guest
This has been discussed to " death " pardon pun. That is why I offer no opinion. Ask and you may receive but beware. Some older members may be tired of this particular topic. However, be forewarned its touchy. Its a can of worms, it is. > Hay, > > Talk me through this!
