Amy I have never tried Licorice as it can cause a fast rise in BP. It

keep what cortisol you make in your system longer that is how it raises

your levels but you have no cpntrol over when it raiszes them.

So, too, unpredictable you think?

You know, I've been trying to make sense of how fatigued my adrenals

really are. According to my January saliva tests, I was in the

normal reference range, but still had low cortisol in the morning

and somewhat high at night.

I was supplementing with 10 mg of DHEA then. If you back my DHEA

back to low, which is where it was before supplementation, the graph

would show me in Stage 4 adrenal fatigue. This seems to correlate

more with the symptoms I experience.

Does it make sense then, that my Stage diagram was thrown off by my

DHEA supplemention? So that the true picture is stage 4, and it

just showed normal b/c I was supplementing DHEA? I know my DHEA

levels are low when I don't supplement. They were low before I

started supplementing, then when I stopped for several months, they

went right back down.

Thanks,

Amy

Hi Amy

I tried Licorice root when I was first diagnosed with adrenal fatigue. The

doctor likes to try natural things first. I was also diagnosed with insulin

resistance and prescribed Metformin at the same time. So I started them both.

Over the month I felt worse and worse. I started having chest discomfort and a

pounding heart. My arm hurt and my chest hurt. All the time I thought it was

the metformin. I finally ended up having all sorts of heart tests and my heart

was fine.

After reading on this site and my doctor changing me to hc I realize that it was

probably the licorice causing my heart palps and discomfort and not the

metformin after all. The reason I think this is because as soon as I started

the HC I started having the heart palps a lot. So I think that the licorice was

causing me to have some thyroid dumping. My cortisol was so low all day that I

know the licorice couldn't have helped me at all. Possibly if your adrenals

aren't too bad it might help but pay attention to any heart type symptoms you

might have.

I was doing some additional reading on adrenal fatigue today and saw

some talk of licorice root. I've seen this before, but never tried

it. Have any of you used it, and what results have you seen?

Thanks,

Amy

You know Amy I think too little emphasis is placed on DHEA as a

supplement when our adrenals are weak. I jknow at my worst hypo I feel

certian that what kept my adrenals alive at all was the fact that I was

taking copious amounts of DHEA. And I think you could very well be right

that your adrenals were worse than it looked due to your supplementing DHEA>

Good question. My adrenals are not terribly shot. I guess I'm at the 3-4th stage

out of 7 and I took about 4 of them maybe 2-3 months without any results at

all.

Hi, Amy,

I was taking licorice root for about two weeks. I definitely noticed

a difference in the sense that it did extend what little cortisol I

have. I ended up stopping it about a week ago, because my BP was

creeping up a little, and I don't need to add THAT to my laundry list!

I started Isocort & that is helping for sure.

Good luck!

Warmly,

I started taking licorice root powder about a 3 weeks ago. It has

made a HUGE difference in my health. I am in stage 7 and have had

major trouble with low blood pressure and dehydration as well as all

the other issues with adrenal fatigue. I am on Florinef and take a

ton of sea salt. The only thing that has helped get me over the hump

has been the licorice root powder. I suppose when you get so far down

the line that these other issues become big deals like the low blood

pressure and dehydration. I am pretty sure that when I was in the

other stages (and didn't know about all of this but hindsite...) I did

not have low blood pressure or such bad dehydration.

The ND who put me on the powder said it helps extend the

hydrocortisone but it also inhibits an enzyme that helps you retain

more sodium and balances out the sodium/potassium ratio. Hence, for

me, less dehydration, less heart palpitations and milder headaches.

My headaches have been so horrible too. I started taking 1/4 cup then

bumped it up to 1/2 cup 3 days ago. Since then I have only had a very

mild headache. My heart palpitations are about 40% better too. I get

to go up every 5 days until I get to a full cup. I can't wait!! This

stuff has been magic for me!

By the way...where is Steve? I miss his amazing posts.

a,

What is your dose of licorice powder per day? Do you take it once a day or more

times per day?
