Mark & Ellen Warner ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Creative Expression Helpful to Those with Dementia (Source: Mayo Clinic) - Creativity and dementia is an area of great interest. Each of us is creative in some way; whether it may be cooking, gardening, dancing, poetry, ... , just to name a few. Dr. Gene Cohen, who passed away last year, explained that " the inherent capacity for creative expression exists throughout the entire life cycle. " His research lead to the findings that brain plasticity (the brain's ability to change throughout life and form new connections) is present in older individuals and is thought to promote creativity. Dr. Bruce pioneered research recognizing that degeneration in the left side of the brain may limit language, but may enhance and release musical or artistic abilities. His work revealed how much creativity exists in dementia patients. Their study concluded that berries, and possibly walnuts, activate the brain's natural " housekeeper " mechanism, which cleans up and recycles toxic proteins linked to age-related memory loss and other mental decline. Shibu Poulose, Ph.D., with the U. S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging in Boston, who presented the report, said previous research suggested that one factor involved in aging is a steady decline in the body's ability to protect itself against inflammation and oxidative damage. This leaves people vulnerable to degenerative brain diseases, heart disease, cancer, and other age-related disorders. " The good news is that natural compounds called polyphenolics found in fruits, vegetables and nuts have an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect that may protect against age-associated decline, " said Poulose. The newly discovered drugs block a protein (LRRK2) that, when altered in people, leads to Parkinson's disease. The protein is overactive in some Parkinson's patients and causes nerve cells to shrivel up and die. Why this protein, when it is overactive, is toxic and leads to Parkinson's disease is still unknown. There is no proven protective treatment yet. Only recently have genetic causes of Parkinson's disease been identified that have the potential to be used for developing targeted therapies for patients with the disease. The FDA said studies appear to show an increase in the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death for people taking the drug, but noted the findings were not clear and that such serious heart problems are not uncommon in Parkinson's patients. The agency stressed that no patient should stop taking the drug without first speaking with a doctor.
