Your comment about the kittens reminded me of something. Actually, I think

my mom may have been a cat hoarder when I was a child. We had several cats

and they were always having kittens. I was in elementary school and my

parents told me that they were all my cats and I was responsible for finding

them homes. I nearly got an ulcer over it - there was no way I could take

care of 6, 7 cats and kittens by myself. They were always dying, too, or I

was having to feed them with baby bottles because their mothers got hit by

cars. It was horrible. I've never had a cat since. I like them, but they

stress me out. Now I know that there is no way an 8, 9 year old could take

care of that many animals without help from an adult.

All the time. Mine are being unable to move or talk, falling, flying and having

to take exams with only leaves for paper. My biggest repeat dream is thinking I

have forgotten something important and spending the entire dream trying to

remember what it is and being terrified that I won't ever straighten it out. The

other really weird dream I have is about houses, all kinds, and trying to figure

out how many rooms there are in them.

recurring dreams

I wanted to expand on this topic and ask just in general what

people's recurring dreams are. Since someone noted the plumbing

dream it makes me wonder if there are other dreams that KO's might

have in common. One dream I have had all my life is of being in some

kind of confrontation where I have to defend my self and my arms go

numb and I can't move them, and I try to yell or scream and nothing

comes out. I've been having that one on a regular basis for at least

30 years, no matter how hard I try my arms are limp and my vocal

chords won't work.

Also I have a recurring dream that a cat or kitten gets badly

injured and dies, and it is always my fault, that one I've had over

and over but the manner of injury is always different, I think that

that comes from losing my kitten when I was 8.

I also have one that I have abandoned one of my dogs, or

just 'forgotten' to go back and feed them and they have died. I have

never done this in real life so I don't know why but I awaken in

terror that I've just realized I let an animal starve to death. This

has never happened and I suspect this symbolized parts of myself

that are undernourished because of dealing with the bpd in the

family and their overwhelming presence; even though I'm not ashamed

of who I've become I do feel that I could have bloomed alot more

fully had I not been stifled by the looming bpd haze.

Does anyone else have recurring dreams?

I think the one about taking an exam with only leaves for paper is

really interesting, for me that is how I look at my adult life when I

look back, being totally unprepared for life because I spent my whole

childhood trying to make sense of the insanity going on in my home

instead of preparing for adulthood.

that is pure insanity. It really makes me mad, both for your sake and

the animal's sakes. Bless your heart for having all that

Leaves for paper! That's funny! We should look that up!

Mayalisa,

I have two that I dream fairly regularly; when I can remember my

dream. 1) I usually am running away from something or in a terrible

hurry to get somewhere and can't move fast enough. My arms and legs

are almost pinned like I'm moving through jello pudding or sometimes

it's a huge crowd of people pressed so tightly together that I can't

get through. And 2) I actually dream I'm late for something important

like work, a meeting, business appointment or an airplane departure.

Nothing ever actually happens in the dream except I worry myself all

night long about being late for something really important or that if I

don't get up this instant I'm going to be late. (Kinda like the Rabbit

in Alice in Wonderland " I'm late, I'm late, I'm late! " ) I always have

the sense that someone is counting on me to be somewhere and I'm

horribly late getting to something I promised someone I'd do and swore

I wouldn't let them down.

Kindest regards,

Mercy

Yes, the cats are a terrible memory. I even remember knowing about spay and

neuter, but my parents refused because it cost $40.$40! Sheesh!

Thanks for your concern, though and for helping me remember it and to rember

it like an adult looking back, not like a scared, stressed kid.

It's interesting to me that so many of the BPD survivors are animal lovers.

I have 3 beautiful, well groomed and manicured dogs now, Girlscout, a welsh

terrier, Cowboy, a mutt rescue and Loki, a rotty lab rescue. I just got back

from playing frisbee with Girlscout and learned that she is a great catch

but doesn't want to work! She got mad when I asked her to carry her own

frisbee home. Terriers! My favorite breeds but they are such little sh*ts.

My dogs get fresh bandanas every day and I even paint their nails (boys too,

in boyish colors). No cats though, cats give me stress.

GirlScout,

My Gracie is a Rotty Lab rescue! She is the pup of three, well, she

acts like it. I was determined to only have two dogs but when I saw

her up for adoption I just had to have her. She was either hit by a

car or beaten as a pup and they had to amputate her back right leg.

She is a sweetie!

This KO has a soft heart for animals too. I'd take 'em all home if I

could!

Oh the poor baby! How old is she? I bet she does just fine with her 3 legs.

I bet Loki would love her. You know, Loki is a gorgeous Rotty tough boy and

protects me from strangers, but he is a complete pansy. Is Gracie like that?

All he wants is to be brushed and held and to lay in the sun next to Cowboy.

Loki is actually my boyfriend's dog but I take care of him - brushing his

beautiful double coat and teeth, cleaning his eyes and ears (he has a

chronic ear problem that seems to heal with hydrochortizone), we even make

him special dog food. He is beautiful and is like a puppy again now that he

has Girlscout and Cowboy (both 2 years old) to keep him young. He lost about

15 pounds when I got my hands on him and he is as bouncie as the youngsters,

even though he is about 10 years old! People always think he is a puppy. I'm

really proud of that.

Ha ha, 2 dogs only! That was me, but then I met my honey and I had 2 and he

had 1. . . now we have 3 happy babies. I want one more for a total of four -

I'm dying to have a little girl Airdale again. Of course, I'm not going to

get one because 4 would be insane, but I really want one.

Send me a picture of Gracie!

Mayalisa,

Its so very strange that you mention the dream about forgetting to

feed the dogs and they die. I also have that dream and as you said

this never happened in real life. Very weird that we would have the

same theme in our dreams. always feel terribly guilty. (Nada had

a wonderful way of making me feel guilty for just about everything).

My other dream is that there are Tornadoes approaching my family

home (usually its my family home but not always) and I have nowhere

to run or hide in the house. I just have to watch them approach

closer and closer. I can hear the tornadoes, they are very loud and

make a high pitched machinery sound. I almost always alone in these

dreams (the way I felt when was a child). I feel hopeless,

helpless and very frightened in the Tornado dreams (again very much

how I felt growing up with nada who was /is an unreasoning, angry

and unstoppable force of nature).

I've had many dreams that I am living with my parents and I realize

that I actually own and am paying on my own home, but I can't get to

it, or I can't remember exactly where it is. Like I had a choice but

I chose to stay with my parents and forgot that I could do something else.

Anxiety dreams where I have somewhere to get but, despite much effort,

am moving unbelievably slow.

Also, I have 6 cats and I dream that I take them places and forget how

many of them I brought and I'm suddenly in a house with 100 cats and I

need to take my own home and I can't find them. I keep picking up

other cats, saying, " Well, I'll just take this one too. " Like it's my

job to save everyone.

Wow, I have the tornado and storm (and nuclear war) dreams as well. I

haven't though of those in a while. I think I will look that up like

did with the plumbing dream and see what happens.

I am glad to know I am not alone about the animals dream. Sometimes I

would sit there and think and think after I woke up, just trembling

trying to remember if it was real and I had actually done such a

horrible thing. L(

Yeah-- and it's interesting because in Dutch or Flemish, my mother

tongue, the word for leaf and paper is both " blad " , so there is only

one word to refer to leaves and papers... Katrina

wow one dream that i used to have a lot was that i would be very

angry at someone (not anyone i know, i wouldnt even remember what the

person looked like) and i would be trying to punch them or hit them

and my hit wouldnt do anything. i would do the motion but no matter

how hard i tried, there would be no force with it at all and the

person would just laugh at me which would make me even angrier and i

would slap and punch and hit repeatedly over and over and still

nothing would happen. i havent had that dream for a while tho

thankfully. but i used to have it quite often. i think i know the

meaning but does anyone else have any insight to add?

I remember having war dreams every single night all night long from

the age of 3 until about 17. I had never mentioned them because I

always thought everyone must have these. It wasn't until I was 21 in

college and everone is talking about dreams and I say matter of factly

yea and what about those war dreams....everyone looks at me and replys

what war dream?? at the time I had no clue about the abuse and BPD

and assumed since I grew up in the 60's it was due to vietnam but now

I believe it was representative of my house hold. The other

reacurring dreams also involve what you mention mayalisa about having

no voice and being imobile when some one is attacking me. However

last month I had this same dream a man was going to rape me and as the

dream went on my voice became at least a whisper and I had a little

strength but all these young children of different nationalities came

to my room to save me they yelled loud what I could only whisper get

out of my room! they also swarmed him and then police came and he was

arressted. I guess I am making progress. The other thing that has

changed in the last month for me is I was never able to get any food.

It would be all around me but it would disappear or go rotton when I

reached for it. I had never in my 45 years tasted something in my

dream but again about a month ago I could handle food and eat it and

taste it and it was good. Very profound I still have intense dreams

with the Nada yelling screaming physically fighting well she hurts me

but I haven't been able to hurt her YET. working on that one.

Whoa, that last one about the house sent a 'zing' through my body. I always

have recurring dreams about the inside of house. They tend to be like mazes and

I'm also going through many rooms.

The other one I have is trying to save either cats or kids. Often trying to

get them in the car to keep them from the lurking danger and they keep getting

out so I get paniced and keep putting them back in, but can never seem to get

them all in.

It does sound like you are making progress. I think in dreams we process things

we are too fearful of dealing with in real life or they become a mirror to

reflect emotions and fears when need to pay attention to. I think the dream with

the kids coming to your rescue is one you really need to pay attention to. It

seems to signify that your subconscious is letting you know that you are WORTH

saving. You are overcoming all that negative programming. That is sooooo cool.

Keep working on it. You will get there.

yes, what is that very popular novel where the house is a maze and

the rooms all keep changing and there is a part of the house that no

one has been in, and the staircase keeps moving, and everyone has a

different version of what happed or is happening??? I can't remember

the name but it has a cult following, apparently it is told through

five or six narrators and jumps around alot. When I read about it on

wikipedia it just jumped out at me as being symbolic of growing up

with abuse and with a mentally ill caretaker, where everyone describes

and remembers all the events completely differently. Has anyone read

this? It seemed a bit too scary for me to want to put in my psyche

right now but it is a very popular book.

I have had the exact same dream!! Except it was someone I could not

stand, and my arm would be limp and wouldn't make a dent, and it used

to be so frusrating that I was trying to hit them and couldn't do any

damage. I hate those limp arm and voice dreams, I just feel so

devastated when I wake up.

I don't know why, but this thread has gotten itself attached to a

thread from 2002, when I originally posted it I thought it was a new

thread. Sorry if I messed up somehow, I know it is confusing.

Dear mayalisa - I saw your post about the cat dream and had to

write. I had a similar series of dreams about injured and dying

cats and kittens, which became especially strong when I began

psychotherapy. Some were very vivid, I remember one in particular

where I was sobbing because my beloved cat had had its insides

ripped out, and in my dream my mother and sister were laughing,

saying that a cat with claws doesn't deserve to have kittens.

I always tended to be very dismissive of my dreams, and this was no

exception - but my therapist wasn't. She explained the significance

of the cat as an instinctual animal, and I realized that my

subconscious was trying to tell me how badly my instincts had been

wounded by my nada and my family (who always told me that I was

imagining how difficult my nada was). Once i finally accepted that,

my dreams went on to focus on other animals - dogs, wolves,

eventually even a horse - animals with different attributes and more

defenses than a cat. I was really at a stage where I felt everything

so viscerally that I think my subconscious tried to communicate me

at the most primal and instinctual level - through animals. Today I

finally have moved past that " survival mode " , and now there are

actually people rather than animals in my dreams who protect me or

tell me things.

I have also had a recurrent dream, a little like yours with the dog,

about letting a parakeet of mine starve to death. This was long

before therapy, so I never analyzed it, but I think it was about my

ego failing to nurture a trait - with a bird, maybe creativity? - in

order to survive. Whenever I wrote, drew, etc, my parents would

take it from me and laugh at it and ridicule it publicly...horrible.

Hope this might help!

one dream that I have that I wanted to add for the sake of levity is

that I sometimes dream that there is a table full of every chocolate

confection under the sun. Just every kind of chocolate cake and cookie

and brownie as far as the eye can see. Once I dreamed they were loaded

up in my dad's station wagon and I was unloading them one right after

the other. That is the one recurring dream I have that is pleasant,

although I hate what it says about my chocolate addiction.

I really need to look up what houses are supposed to signify. These dreams are

the hardest to pin down, they come right out of the blue. My sense in them is

that I am making progress towards some goal. I just need to figure out what that

goal is. When I get some insight, I'll let you know.

recurring dreams

Something else to consider about cats. They are very independent, survivors,

they have 9 lives and they are affectionate. There have been studies that

indicate the purring mechanism in cats actually can drop your blood pressure

when you listen to it. I read somewhere that the reason that women like cats so

much is that because of their big eyes they remind us of children. I think the

point about being an instinctual animal is spot on and for most of us represents

our survival instincts in dreams.

Neat.

Interesting dreams. I was just wondering if your BPD fears your

abandonment and is still controlling you in a way that you feel they

would not survive without you...if the dog that died because you

didn't return to feed it, is symbolic for your BPD person, the

dream makes perfect sense to me.

My BPD mom comes right out and tell's me she can't survive without

me, and sais things like, " What would I do if I didn't have you. I

wouldn't make it. " And " now you have to take care of me. " I was the

family caretaker. And at five years old my mom had already told me

that I couldn't marry because, I was to stay and take care of her

needs. Maybe your dream is signifying the strong feelings conjured

up by such emotional strangulation as this that were put on you at a

young age, by a bpd parent.

As a baby, toddler, child we are completely dependent on others and

it's important we are not abandoned. It's terrifying when the parent

puts the strain of this on the child in some sort of weird role

reversal.

> All the time. Mine are being unable to move or talk, falling,

flying and having to take exams with only leaves for paper. My

biggest repeat dream is thinking I have forgotten something important

and spending the entire dream trying to remember what it is and being

terrified that I won't ever straighten it out. The other really weird

dream I have is about houses, all kinds, and trying to figure out how

many rooms there are in them.
