Welcome ,

My mother had been exhibiting signs of dementia for several years before

she was diagnosed. At one point she was hospitalized and given BOTH

Haldol and Ativan. One turned her into a raving maniac so they gave her

the other and it made her unable to talk or walk or feed herself. It was

a DRAMATIC difference within a matter of days.

I had her moved to a different hospital where she was correctly

diagnosed, and she had a fairly good recovery. But giving drugs that she

never should have had (by a doctor who told me that one dementia is like

another and that I should just put her in a nursing home) nearly killed

her. There are so many drugs that LBD victims should never have, that

are commonly given to people with Alzheimer's or other dementias.

When a sudden decline such as this happens, it is usually from either a

drug as noted above and by others, an infection (such as a UTI which is

common), or pain such as a toothache.

I was blessed in that my mother was restored nearly to her former state

after the aforementioned events, many are never able to regain the same

mental status.

One thing for sure, whomever is responsible for your sister will need to

learn what they can about the disease, behaviors, and appropriate

medications, because many if not doctors have the same level of

knowledge about LBD as the one that could have killed my mother.

All of my best to you and to your sister :).

people in her home at night though fully awake. she seemed undisturbed about

this until about a month ago when she became suddenly fearful and totally out of

it. the police and 911 were called by her and they took her to the hospital. at

that time she had been having memory problems but was ok walking by herself,

driving and no incontinence but only days after her admission she was wheelchair

bound , unable to hardly walk and experiencing incontinence. i can see the

mental stuff coming on this suddenly but physical symptoms coming on this

dramatically over just a few days seems very hard to believe yet the nursing

memory care unit shes now in say its typical of lewy bodies.

since my mom died of regular alzheimers in her late 80s how much likely will it

be i get this too?
