The purpose of the list is not to convince people to stop taking these drugs. It is to help people who have already decided to stop taking these drugs. Normally, I wouldn't respond to this type of question because it can lead to discussions that take us off-track from the group's purpose. I'm going to make an exception here because I think it's important that I share my philosophy with people who belong to the group. IMO,the reason to not take drugs like this should be obvious -- pharmaceutical drugs are potent toxins that can occasionally save lives; however, the way pharmaceutical drugs are primarily prescribed and used today results in people becoming more vulnerable to chronic and termninal illnesses. Due to numerous adverse effects, pharma drugs were not meant to be taken over a long period of time. If you read the drug monographs in the PDR, many of these drugs have a disclaimer stating that long term use " over 5 weeks " or " over 8 weeks " (yes, most actually say this) " has not been evaluated for safety and efficacy " . This is how the drug companies protect themselves when people end up with various diseases as a result of long term drug use. They KNOW that long term use will cause problems. This is why the clinical trials required for FDA approval are very short. Very few people show chronic problems after 3, 6, or 8 weeks (unless it is a psychotropic drug one is attempting to discontinue). If you look at the " side effects " and " adverse effects " of any of these drugs you will see there are hundreds of them. These " side effects " are the language your body uses to tell you that it is being adversely affected by the drug(s). The term " side effects " is so vague and seemingly benign that people pay no attention to what it really means. While most " side effects " can be experienced short term (1-4 weeks, which is the period of time most drugs are meant to be prescribed)without having a longterm deleterious effect on one's health, use of pharmaceutical drugs on a regular basis results in the deterioration of various bodily systems (as outlined in the monographs) leading to a profound enough disturbancein the organism to create chronic, debilitating illness and even terminal disease. I will answer the one question here that is appropriate for this list. The " natural " replacement for Valium, Ultram, and trazedone cannot be determined until the actual cause of the symptoms you've sought to address with these drugs is diagnosed. Until then, you are masking symptoms, not addressing the cause. This will often lead to further deterioration. BTW, did you know that Ultram has SSRI properties?
