Re: Joan: I Need Your Opinions

Hi Joan,

It's an excellent idea. When Jim was in the nursing home, I thought it was warm

in there, but his hands and feet were always cold. I bought him flannel sheets

to keep him warm, but I also snuck in a heating pad that I would plug in and let

him warm up a little before taking it out. If the staff had ever seen it, they

would have had me remove it. He always appreciated it. I had to make sure it

was

turned on low enough that it would not burn him and I kept an eye on it. I

think

your rice pack idea is great. I had no place to heat up a rice pack at the

nursing home, but that's a great idea!

I once saw something that you snap and put in gloves to keep hands warm and I

looked for something like that for Jim, but I couldn't find it. Once this thing

is snapped it warms up. I saw it in a Sports Store once and wished I had bought

it then, because it would have been nice for Jim, since I didn't have access to

a microwave to heat a rice pack at the nursing home.

Joan, I like this concept as long as the pack isn't heated too hot. We don't

want any burns ensuing. My mom needed a rolled up washcloth in her right hand

toward the end as her hand was tightly closed with the Parkinsonism and we

wanted to prevent skin breakdown. A nice warm roll would have been perfect. I'm

also thinking sized to fit into slippers or socks if the person isn't ambulatory

anymore, perhaps under or on the toes. I take one to bed at night for my back as

I am sitting, then under my neck when I go to sleep. I find body heat helps keep

it warm for quite a while.

Have fun with this.

Thanks, Jan.

Yeah...I have to think about the warming up in a NH issue.

I really appreciate the comments. That way I can have the kinks worked out.

Thank you, Marcia.

Would you be able to take a picture and email it to me at

joan_croft@...?

I love all the ideas and questions...

I was looking on the internet last night and there are heat packets taht you

press a metal circle in side and it heats up...then you can put it in a pan of

boiling water on the stove or in a bowl with water in the microwave until the

filling is liquid again. You let it cool and then you can reactivate it with

the metal circle again. I was thinking of making something that it easy to

grasp on that has the packet...the packets could be taken home and renewed and

then brought back to your loved one the next day.

I am still in the planning stages, but all of you have great ideas and comments.
