Locks?

We need to lock up the food. I think we will put a simple hasp and

key lock on the bifold pantry doors but, what do I do for the

refrigerator? I don't really want to drill holes into my fridge and

damage something but I need to be able to control access to the food

also. The only thing we aren't locking up are the freezers but there

is only raw meat and veggies in the freezers, and one package of

shredded cheese. After our present supply of icecream is gone I

won't be buying anymore so the freezers should be safe from

pillaging. Anyone?

It depends on the strength factor...but we had some success for a

while with some child locks from Home Depot that were vinyl strips

with a plastic lock...sort of worked like a seatbelt with the

recepticle part on the side of the fridge...that is all held on with

double-sided tape. I think it's from First Alert or some company like

that. If you need some better description, I could attempt...

We just bought a side-by-side, so we just use those plastic u-locks

now.

I am scared to ask.... but you guys lock your refrigerators because......

why?

I take it someone, or something is eating the food, but why is this bad?

, are her meds making her eat a lot? Or what is it?

She doesn't look heavy in the picture on yahoogroups, I think. I remember

seeing her and thinking she was adorable.

Does she not want to diet at all? Or exercise? Or am I really asking a

dumb question now..... I'm probably asking a really, really dumb question

now.

Never mind.

Do you use a real lock on it? That might work cause you could tell

if she tried to peel the sticky stuff off and it wouldn't be that

easy so maybe that might be enough of a deterant...

Window alarm...now would that work on a fridge? Do I still have to

use a drill? And how much are they?

Gail is eating compulsively. She continues to hoard food and sneak

food. She sneaks food all day long. She hides food and eats it

later. She stuffs her pockets with it. I find wrapers under her

pillow, or in her sheets and under the bed and dresser. I find

wrappers in her jeans and jackets. She is gaining weight at an

alarming rate. She is growing but she is gaining weight much faster

than growth can account for. We have provided a wide variety of

healthy and tasty choices for her but she continually chooses

cheese, butter, candy, donoughts, and the like. Since she cannot

make good choices we have to choose for her or her health will

suffer.

She has zero impulse control. She has no common sense. She has very

poor concepts of boundaries. One of her medications may increase her

appetite some but not to this degree. This behavior is a

continuation, not a new issue. She eats also for some psychological

reasons but she is not acknowledging it and is trying to rationalize

her feelings about eating. She needs an entire new wardrobe since

September. I had seven pairs of pants and I gave her five. That was

less than a month ago and they almost don't fit.

No lock on the viynl....'s description was actually better....it

actually snaps in place...a la Male/Female. (I got a feeling they'll come

out of the woodwork on that description.)

A window alarm is fairly inexpensive...honestly I don't know how much though.

They actually come battery operated. I don't believe you would need a drill.

Velcro works wonders for everything.

Again, you stick one part to the fridge itself, the other, with a small wire

lead to the door.

This won't keep her out of it and you'll be ansering alarms a lot unless the

noise scares her off.

Now, here's a thought. Store your good fridge for a while, go to a used

place, pay a hundred bucks for a used one, drill a hole and install a hasp

lock....

Just an option...

Oh , what a difficult thing! You know, weight watchers will allow a

child to take the program with a doctor's note and a parent -- do you think the

structure of such a program might help her to police herself, or would it do no

good at all?

Ebony is really bad about helping herself, too. I have a gate up to the

kitchen, but she climbs over it. I have also tried the plastic lock that

sticks onto the fridge and clicks together.....she pulled it off. We rent

so I cannot modify the refridgerator at all. The risperdal is making her

much worse about the eating and she is definetely gaining too much weight.

Where do you get these window alarms? Anyone know how much they cost?

,

We used to have to lock up the fridge, because used to like to

sit on the bottom shelf when he was little (can't fit now...). At

first we used one of those plastic baby " appliance locks " , and it

worked well until it broke...then we ended up taking a long rope,

putting a loop on each end, and putting a childproof cabinet lock

through both loops. We held the rope to the fridge with velcro that

was stickied to the fridge...another childproof device that hadn't

worked on it's own...

Twernt' pretty but it worked...and the fridge had no damage.

Yes!!! It can be bad anyway....

When you have an autistic (or not) child who perseverates on mayo and pickles

to the exclusion of everything else. Yes it can be bad.

Wow. I guess I should count myself lucky (and on the poop smearing issue

too, thank God!)

The worst thing Putter ever did was get up in the middle of the night

looking for me. He went screaming through the house and I called him. He

came to me.

Next morning I discovered that while screaming through the house he had

thoughtfully opened the refrigerator and left the door standing wide open.

I had just gone shopping too...

But it was only one time.

No, I didn't know that. Thanks. If this is not sufficient or her

other behaviors escalate we were looking at counseling and a visit

with a dietician. This might be a better alternative though.

down stairs!!

Oh, ...

Poor Gail. At her age, I'm sure, had this been in her control, she would

want to do otherwise, but obviously, this is beyond just a growth spurt.

I don't know what you should do, but sorry for even asking about why someone

would need a lock. I'm of the mindset where I am thrilled if my children

will eat anything at all, even the fridge itself, because they have been so

finicky. I had no idea of the other extreme.

I hope you find a solution. A lock sounds like a good temporary one, but i

hope there is something that can help Gail overcome this compulsion!

Ron, the first time I heard of something described in this way <other than

human beings>, it was these two hose grasping parts. There was a male, and

a female. I thought the clerk was joking, and I grinned. Seeing that he

was completely serious, I checked it out. Peering into it, slowly but

surely, I started " seeing " what this meant.

And wouldn't ya know it -- it made total sense.

I don't know about locks, but for hose contraptions, male parts and female

parts make a LOT of sense! LOL

So far, I don't have this problem here. Nor do I have the poop on walls

problem.

I've been spared. I guess that was the tradeoff - - I get two, but I don't

get all of the usual stuff? :o) Or.......... it is entirely possible I am

speaking too damn soon.

Tamara,

You could definitely get your own fridge. Used ones are quite cheap, and

many are in great condition still. Then you could drill all the holes you

want in them, and it should be fine.

She is four years old - how much does she weigh?

I am envious of all heavier kids. My children are too, too skinny. Syd is

gaining weight, thank goodness, but Madison is still all sticks and bones.

I kid you not. I just said the same thing, and have never even GLANCED at

your e-mail before now. I double checked who it was from thinking i had

reached my own message already! I mean, I just mentioned " no fridge thingie

We have had some cupboard incidents where Syd will take out all the pans and

bang on them, or take a chair to go up on the countertop to get a glass to

get water, but drop the glass, and glass is everywhere... that kind of

stuff... but not the fridge.

Not yet.

Yes Penny, all of that stuff is part of OCD. Gail does that stuff

too and more. It's enough to drive the rest of the family crackers

at times. It isn't enough they hoard their junk in their room but

they spread it all over the house too. I could just scream some days.

Gosh, it's a daily thing for Trevor to play in the bathroom with the shampoo and

soap and get it everywhere...to get into the fridge and dump the milk all over

the floor...or get up on the stove...or put something in the microwave until it

bursts...he breaks bowls and glasses daily. Oh and he actually wears glasses

and has them broke already and hasn't had them very long. LoL! The little

booger is a Tazmanian Devil! :) I can't keep my eye on him at all times altho I

try to. He wears me out. My oldest son is tired of hearing me say....Go get

Trevor out of this or that! LoL! But I'm ready for bed by 7-8 oclock in the

evenings!
