Guest guest
My son is wearing a helmet, all the time to correct his head from his torticollis. Yesterday morning when I took it off, there were two VERY red spots on the corners of his forhead. I left the helmet off until I could see how long the spots would stay. They are still there this morning. So, he has been without his helmet since yesterday. I only see the tech every two weeks. My question is that are there times when your children are without the helmet or band until you can get into the clinic for an adjustment? I am worried that I am wasting the little time we have to correct his head. He is 4.5 months old and a twin. Thanks Bd.
Guest guest
If your son has red spots that last that long, you need to get in for an adjustment right away. My son's appts. are scheduled every 2 or 3 weeks, but we know that if we have red spots, we are to come in for an "extra" appt. Your son should not go that long without the helmet. Good luck. -mom to Aidan STARband 8/26/03 GR MI -----Original Message-----From: selbyiron [mailto:selbyiron@...]Sent: Monday, October 20, 2003 12:46 PMPlagiocephaly Subject: Helmet questionMy son is wearing a helmet, all the time to correct his head from his torticollis. Guest guest
What kind of band/helmet are you using? How far are you from the clinic you are using? I would try to make an " emergency " appt for an adjustment give the red spots you are describing. The problem with leaving the band off for 2 weeks is that your son's head could grow during that time (on the " round " spots), and then the entire helmet may not fit. Is there any way you can get in for an adjustment earlier? At 4 1/2 months, they are growing really quickly. Cranial Technologies has them come in for weekly, not bi- weekly adjustments at that age due to their rapid growth. BTW, are you doing stretching to correct the tort? Guest guest
Hi, You need to call your orthotist and tell them what is going on. I'm sure they'll tell you to come in for an adjustment. It is very common in the beginning of treatment to need an adjustment or 2 or 3. --- In Plagiocephaly , " selbyiron " <selbyiron@a...> wrote: > My son is wearing a helmet, all the time to correct his head from his > torticollis. Guest guest
Are you not able to make an earlier appt for an adjustment? I understand if you have a long drive. Yes, sometimes children are out of their band while waiting for the next appt but if you are able to go ahead and get in to see your ortho I would. You never know when those little ones are going to have a growth spurt. Kudos to you for getting treatment for your child so early! Guest guest
Hi I am not sure where you go for adjustments but I would say call them and let them know and I am sure they will get you in earlier for an adjustment. You really want to keep it on him so you dont miss any growth time. Guest guest
Yes, we are stretching that boy all the time!! It is really helping too. And I have my appt. tomorrow, so I'll just wait at this point. But I think I'll ask them why they aren't seeing him more than biweekly. We have a Craniocap for him. Thanks for your feedback. > > My son is wearing a helmet, all the time to correct his head from > his > > torticollis. Guest guest
No, we don't live too far from the hospital that he is treated at. My appt. is tomorrow anyway, and so I'll just wait. He can have a two day break from his helmet this time. But I am going to see if he can be seen more often. Thanks!! Guest guest
If your 2 week appt is tomorrow, I'd bet he's just growing too quickly and may need adjustments more often. used to fill in the band by the end of the week most times... That's great with the stretching - I know it can be hard, but it makes such a difference!!!! Guest guest
Hi , My son has had his helmet for almost 12 weeks, so I've had all sorts of experiences in public, most of them have been positive. Most people smile at him, some come up to me and tell me they know someone who's baby had to wear the helmet, and very few have stared in a rude way. The people who ask, I tell them it's to help round his head out as he has a flat spot. For the most part, people are amazed that such a device exists and will automatically tell you of someone they know with a child who has a flat spot! My tip for the times that you are out and feeling self conscious or uncomfortable, squeeze and kiss your daughter and ignore everyone around you. It works well for me! Good luck! & Aidan in CT 13 months, doc band 7/21 > > hi my daughter is going to be fitted with a star band in a little > over a week, my question is did you have alot of people come up to > you about your child wearing one and how did you handle answering > their questions. thankyou > angela/san diego ca
Guest guest
Hi , My son has been in the band about 7 weeks now. In the beginning when I took him out I actually looked around to see if people were looking. Now if they are I sometimes don't even notice. I am actually proud of him. Whereas before I felt a little embarrassed. I get a lot of different kinds of reactions. Some people just stare and walk past, others look at and put their bottom lip out as to say, awww, others will look at him then look at me and smile, very few, but some actually stop and ask about it. I personlly like that one the best. They come right out and say, " do you mind me asking what that is for? " I at least get to explain it and let them know that nothing is actually " wrong " with my baby. During the past 2 weeks though I have had 3 people come up to me saying that 1) her baby just had the band taken off a week before 2) her friend's baby wears one now 3) the baby had one on at the time. Good luck.
