Dani,

PDD and Autism are NOT the same thing, per se, but Autism is under the

category of PDD. Think of Pervasive Developmental Disorders as the umbrella

category, and autism is one of its components. If you have autism, you have

a PDD. If you have a PDD, you do not necessarily have autism. Now, in my

opinion, many cases of PDD-NOS are usually cases of autism (albeit milder

than moderate autism), but that is not always so. For example, the

neurologist found that Sydney has PDD-NOS while Madison is autistic. That

is naming two different sides of the same thing to me.

CDD is also under PDD as is Aspergers and some others like Fragile X. I

think there are about 10 different " syndromes " that fall under PDD but don't

quote me on that.... I only concentrate on autism, LOL.

Does that make it any clearer?

Anyhow, it's a good start you had today. Good luck with the dev.

pediatrician, and keep your chin up. Are you okay? You sound a little

shellshocked, not that I would blame you.

I remember that I went to my dx session FULLY KNOWING that my girls were

autistic. In fact, i didn't get them dx'd until there was no doubt in my

mind. But strangely enough, when the doctor dx'd them as autistic, I felt a

small, tiny, bubble of hope I had left in my mind BURST.

It's like when the audiologist told me that my children were not deaf, I

felt so disappointed. Apparently, I had WANTED my child to be deaf instead

of autistic.

But that's all in the past. I hope you're okay. You should go to bed early

tonight. Don't think too much right now.....

not quite. autism is pdd, but pdd is not autism.

pdd or pervasive developmental disorder is the blanket statement for all

spectrum disorders. autism is one of the disorders on that spectrum. aspergers

is another. reyes syndrome is another. and so on.

generally when a dx of pdd is made, it's because the dr isn't exactly sure which

specific disorder the child has, but knows he/she is somewhere on the spectrum.

make sense now? :)

Dani:

PDD and autism are essentially the same thing. Autism is a pervasive

developmental disorder; there are some other conditions that fit in as PDD's

also. PDD is a big umbrella word; everyone who has autism has PDD.

BUT what most people mean when they tell you their child has PDD is that

their child was dx with PDD-NOS which means PDD-Not Otherwise Specified

WHICH in turn means that your child had not enough of the problems

associated with autism to get a full dx but enough for problems to be

present and sometimes pretty serious problems. A child with a PDD-NOS dx

can be non-verbal for instance.

Some doctors prefer just to say autism since there is some doubt about

whether there is even any point in talking about PDD especially since it is

a confusing name anyway.

What sorts of treatments are available for Christian that weren't before; I

know he already qualifies for a variety of interventions. Did the

neurologist tell you anything else you didn't know or point you towards any

local services or suggest any therapies?

complicate matters dh and I are going rounds over it. Last night, he

told me if the doc said he was normal he didn't want to seek any

other docs for more testing. I told him I wanted a second opinion

from a dev. ped. Today, after the dx he wants a second opinion. He

says that he only has tendencies and that doesn't make him autistic.

HUH????? Then what is it? I told him it would be like saying He has

the flu, but saying that he only had symptoms and it didn't mean he

had it. I'm at a loss here.

Kerri -

I am 100% positive that autism falls under PDD.

But - on the same note, I would not be one bit surprised if some doctor

somewhere got the two confused.

Various PERVASIVE disorders falls under PERVASIVE DEVELOPMENT DISORDERS.

The main qualification to be under that PDD label is that it must be

PERVASIVE to the individual with the condition - -and autism, obviously,

qualifies.

However, it COULD be generalized that all PDD's " tend " to have autistic

qualities..... but several of the conditions under PDD are purely genetic

(i.e. fragile x).

And it sounds like is 100% positive also. With that, I'd go argue with

the doctor LOL.

Well, that is debatable, Salli. <It is now, anyhow... back then, I would

have taken most anything over autism....>

Right now, I have people trying to teach them MY language.

If they were deaf, they'd have to learn a new language <sign> and do that

without being able to hear..... or speak..... and to top it all of - - *I*

would have to learn a new language along with them. Yes, it's based on

English, but still, signing is not easy! I bought a book to learn basic

signs to teach my children, and got stumped on the first page!

Of course, we could skip the stimming and self-injurious stuff, and

unattentive, withdrawn, and everything else. Picky eating..... being

treated like a child is retarded....stares.... nobody being able to tell

what is wrong with your child unless you tell them....

Hmm.... perhaps you're right. Perhaps it IS easier. Salli is always right.

Dani, that is also how I was convinced that my children could hear. They

heard the things they wanted to - like Barney videos, the word " juice,

cookie " or " let's eat! " only when they were hungry, etc. But now I wonder

if my children do have hearing issues. Does Christian do any ear plugging

at all? My girls have severe sound sensitivities and it's getting worse.

> running. To say I am shell shocked is putting it mildly. To

> complicate matters dh and I are going rounds over it.

I've been there.

I hated it there, but it had to happen. Why? Not to make him understand,

oh no. To make ME understand that I was on my own until he could accept it

on his own, Dani.

Just like you can't make Christian hear his own name and turn around to

smile at you when you want him to, you can't make your husband accept a dx

he simply cannot interpret.

For the first year of my knowing, I was on my own. Shaun would not even let

me bring it UP. A fight would ensue each time, and because I didn't know

better, I had to make him " see the light " so to speak. No...... it never

happened. I did not make him see the light. What happened was that my

husband just went on living life, and watching his wife and his girls.....

and some time later... more than a year later, it just because undeniable.

Christian is young. Back when my girls were 2, it could have been put to

debate whether or not my girls were autistic.

" Well, yes, they have some autistic qualities, but they are soooo WITH IT,

they can't be " or " Sure, they don't speak yet, but lots of kids don't

speak. " " Oh but they have no odd behavior! " like not saying a word at age

2 after speaking at age 1 is NOT ODD, or not turning around to their names

at age 2 is common??? But from 2 to 3, they got progressively more

autistic. From 13 months to age 2, I was seriously on my own though. The

only person I mentioned it to was Shaun who shot me down for it, and every

single night, this was MY worry, MY problem, MY fault, and MY curse. I'd

say Shaun has been " with me " on this only verrrrry recently... since perhaps

March. With every passing day, he is more with me on it.

Give him time, Dani. Nobody could have made you see Christian as he is

unless they gave you time to see for yourself..... right?

> from a dev. ped. Today, after the dx he wants a second opinion. He

> says that he only has tendencies and that doesn't make him autistic.

> HUH????? Then what is it?

Obviously in denial.

I feel bad for you both. It sucks being " on your own " for something this

traumatic, but at the same time, I have to think that it's ROTTEN being on

the other end where someone is trying to convince me that my child is

AUTISTIC....... I'm sure Shaun felt like screaming to me, " Why are you

DOING this to me!!!?? "

I told him it would be like saying He has

> the flu, but saying that he only had symptoms and it didn't mean he

> had it. I'm at a loss here.

Good point. Or being a little pregnant.....

Hang in there, Dani.

I've found that with me, since knowing my children were autistic, I went

through sadness... then a period of mad research (finding out everything

about autism in itself, then what causes it, and then how to fix it, and

then you see the statistics and then you decide you just have to help your

child....), and then a period of GREAT FURIOUS anger where I honestly cursed

God, and even as a Christian, I vowed on one night to NEVER pray again <I

lied>, and then more sadness.

What I am trying to figure out now, 2.5 years later, is when the sadness

started to ease up on me, and this strange feeling of being totally resigned

and numb came over me.

Oh, and when in doubt - -TALK ABOUT IT. TALK TALK and TALK. <or write!>

If you ask 5 different " experts " you'll get 5 different views on the

PDD/Autism question...I think the truth is, they don't know

themselves. I know that a friend of mine (a speech therapist)

recently went to a national autism conference, and said she learned

that there is a group working on reclassifying the diagnostic

groupings for " autism " , and we will see a whole new system in the

next year or so---and get this: they are HOPING to keep it down to

no more than 10 different subtypes!

I'm sure you'll get a ton of answers on this one, but here is my take.

PDD=Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Autism lies within that

definition as it is a " developmental disorder " .

In order to receive an Autism dx, the person must meet a certain

number of criteria. If they do not, the disorder is generally dx'd

as PDD-NOS or PDD-Not Otherwise Specified.

Also, some people do not WANT an Autism dx and opt for PDD instead.

Less stigma, I suppose.

Then again, some parents definitely WANT the Autism dx because then

the child will be allowed more services.

Fun isn't it?

Anyway, hope this makes sense. There is no school today and Jacqui

is really thrown off.

Sounds like your DH doesn't like the A-Word and does not want it

associated with Christian. That's all fine and good, but even

the " tendencies " need the appropriate attention.

We have talked about this in a little more detail since my original

post. It seems that we just disagree on the dx, not on how to handle

it. We both believe that we should get him all of the services

available to him. We are on a better page today than on Friday.
