Gunman shoot two deputies in Alice

Eds: AMs.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - Lawmen surrounded an Alice man's home

Monday after he reportedly shot two sheriff's deputies who had tried to arrest

and commit him to a mental institution.

Both officers suffered minor wounds and were treated and released

from Alice Regional Hospital, police said.

Officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the U.S. Border

Patrol, the Duval County Sheriff's Office, and the Corpus Christi SWAT team

surrounded the man's home in west Alice, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times

reported.

The gunman refused to answer the telephone, and police have been

unsuccessful in communicating with him, Corpus Christi Police Chief Pete Alvarez

said.

Police were communicating with the gunman with a bullhorn, telling

him to pick up the phone. They were considering tossing a cellular phone through

a window to the man. Alvarez said they were considering using tear gas if

further attempts at communicating failed.

The standoff apparently began around noon when two Mental Health and

Mental Retardation caseworkers attempted to commit the man, who lives with

grandmother, said Capt. Garza of the Jim Wells County Sheriff's

Department.

The man became violent with the case workers, who retreated and

called deputies for help.

Deputy Ray Aguilar of the Jim Wells Sheriff's Office arrived at the

home and was reportedly shot through the door the unidentified gunman with a

shotgun.

He was wounded in the head and chest and ran for cover in a barbecue

pit. Other officers arrived shortly after, and Deputy Pomeroy, was shot

while trying to spot the shooter inside the home.
