Hi, Elva, good to hear from you again..yes you remember correctly, metformin

doesn't really begin to accomplish anything until well over the dose you're

taking. However, it is good to start gradually to avoid the runs, etc., a

common enough side effect of metformin. Did your doc say specifically to

stay at 250 mg? Because I dont' think you'll see any change until you get

more metformin into your system -- I think 1000 mg is the Magic Number... but

it does take a while to build up and take effect. Are you low carbing? This

might help get numbers down, if you're not doig it already...if you are, talk

to doc about increasing metformin. Vicki

In a message dated 01-06-04 17:15:38 EDT, you write:

My question is - is 250 mg enough when first starting metformin? I thought

I'd read here that most people start around 500 mgs.

So far no intestinal distress! My tummy has felt a bit off today, and I

chalk it up to the meds, it's certainly not causing me any grief.

Well, my doc started me on one 500mg per day. You're on the same dose,

only 250mg at a time. I think your doc knows what's going on, and is

trying to prevent gastric problems for you. I take 2250mg per day now

with no problems. Studies have shown that most need 1500mg to be

effective, although I've seen some get results from less. Always, YMMV.

Hello Elva,

I have been put on metformin (glucophage)also.

Same dosage. 250mg x 2.

Are you having to break the 500mg pill in half to get that

dosage? Where I live they say they don't make a 250 pill.

For me the dosage seems to work as long as I don't pig out

on the wrong food..

metformin question

Hi folks,

I have been lurking lately, havent posted in ages. I had gone over two yrs

med free but my bg's had begun to creep up, and then I had some unexpected

super duper stress added to my life and I found myself wildly out of

control in a very short time. I have come to the conclusion that stress is

a real killer for me when it comes to my bg level. I went to the doc who

put me on metformin, so I guess the days of maintaining control without

meds are over for me :-( but I knew I had to do something about this. I

take 250 mg's twice a day to start, she gave me 30 days worth of pills, and

said it can take 3 weeks before I see much difference. It's been 4 days

now and my bg level is still high so it's good I was warned it takes a

while before I will see any results.

My question is - is 250 mg enough when first starting metformin? I thought

I'd read here that most people start around 500 mgs.

When I started, it was

500 mg with breakfast for 2 weeks, then 500 with breakfast and 500 with dinner

for two weeks, and just kept increasing.

Ask your doc about switching to Glucophage XR instead, which you take at night.

You did say you're taking 250mg twice daily. That's 500mg, which is (IIRC)

the minimum dose.

I also had to bite the bullet and start Glucophage XR 500mg daily. It

showed for me almost immediately. I take it with supper, and my fasting

numbers have dropped from 115-120 back to a reasonable 90-105.

Hi Elva- I was just wondering if your diet changed at all? I am off meds

right now and hoping to stay that way. I eat extremely low carb. As to

Glucophage - my dr started me on 500 2 x a day. I got terrible stomach

problems from it. I went to the web site and it said doses under 1500 a day

" have not been proven effective " so I asked my dr to let me go off it. I

have been off it for a while and my numbers are staying between 85- 120. Up

to 140 after eating. 250 seems low but maybe it will keep you from getting

the horrible stomach probs I had.
