Guest guest
Have ya'll ever had so many things on your mind at once that you can't figure out where to start first? First of all my name is Kellie, I'm 40, divorced with two children, son 18 & daughter 16. All my life I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with me. As it turns out I'm somewhere on this Autism Spectrum and I'm sure, like so many others, wrongfully diagnosed. Although I'm also sure a diagnosis isn't going to make anything just go away. Only 3 months ago some relatives (that I did not grow up with) pointed out that I may be Autistic to some degree. They were and are right. I am curently in the process of getting a DX. Knowing my luck they will say I'm just plain old fashioned wierd. I'm shocked and lol because I've been on this group almost a week and reading everything that has been posted. Good grief, so much fighting. I think ya'll are more normal than you think but I must agree that " we " are in some ways superior to NT's. FYI.. I tend to agree with most of both sides in any debate. I don't see why we can't take the best of two sides and make a third opinion that really works. One of my questions is: Has anyone else out here simply acted like themselves been taken advantage of in some way and then turned in to a " monster " of sorts because your tired of people treating you poorly for no reason? I have often heard " Now girl why you acting like that? You used to be so sweet and now your being a B---H. Why? "

I'm glad that works you. I used to take meds but dont like the way they won't let me feel anything. No joy, no sadness or anything in-between. Without meds I blend into the furniture 99% of the time. My version of monster is yelling for a few minutes maybe 3-4 times a year. Oh, well I was living with 6 teenagers with various emotional & behavioral issues ... I yelled almost daily. I take only half the prescribed dose ... just enough to give me control. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

If the idea is to reach the truth, the way to do that is to debate it out and see what rises to the top. Truth is truth-- you don't find that by randomly blending part of what one person says and part of what another person says. > One of my questions is: Has anyone else out here simply acted like > themselves been taken advantage of in some way and then turned in to > a " monster " of sorts because your tired of people treating you poorly > for no reason? Yeah, I have been pretty brutal with people that have attacked me in relatively minor ways here. It's something I have to watch... I am better in that way than I was years ago, though. Guest guest
Hey Kellie! Welcome! Of course " we're more normal... " All that autism is, is a tendency totally mess up social communication, including having different ways of showing feelings, being more direct because all the subtle mumbo- jumbo that non-autistics use was something we never or only partially learned, gaining information from our senses (sensory integration), etc. It's not us that needs the realization of how normal we really are. You're very normal too. You feel, think, reason, want, need, and all the other things by which all people of intelligence define themselves. We just don't " act " normal socially. There is also a higher incidence of " comorbid " conditions (stuff that tends to happen along with a condition). In autism, those comorbid conditions are often confused as part of the autism, such as OCD, anxiety, etc. It only has been a recent development that those of us that are considered " high- functioning " (e.g. " intelligent " ) have become recognized by medical, psychological, and just barely starting, educational professionals. One of the stigmas we are facing is that most people think of " classic autism " when they hear the term, and " classic autism " can include co-morbid conditions such as mental retardation. Unfortunately, that means that it makes it even harder to gain acceptance of our being " different, " and means that we are often treated meanly. Understanding why it is happening makes it a smidge easier to bear. A little. Once again, welcome to the group! > > Have ya'll ever had so many things on your mind at once that you can't figure out where to > start first? > > First of all my name is Kellie, I'm 40, divorced with two children, son 18 & daughter 16. Guest guest
Yes, I love a good debate... which is why I stayed the hell out of this last " debate " . When it degenerates to name-calling, as this one did almost instantly, I know better than to jump in. I cannot convince someone who is automatically virulently opposed to anything I might have to say (or in some cases, even my right to say it), and I won't leave myself open to pointless abuse. > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: " Klein " <ascaris@... <ascaris%40cox.net>> > > > > Do you > > think that only normal people have opinions they are willing to debate? > > Aspies love a good debate. > > > If the idea is to reach the truth, the way to do that is to debate it > > out and see what rises to the top.
