Guest guest
Dorothy....Constipation is one of the problems associated with lots of diseases and conditions of aging. We are on the Mirilax every day routine since Del had a visit to our local ER for an impacted bowel. In addition he takes 800 mg of ducosate sodium every day, he eats yogurt with an active culture and he takes 1/4 cup of a senna fruit paste that I make at home. Just the senna fruit paste would generally act like dynamite for anyone else, but it takes all of these to make him 'go'. And he has the inability to push and an inability to feel the need to go without all this. With it, he has a BM almost every day. Good luck. Severe constipation becomes a medical emergency, but I am sure you know that. Nan...husband Del dx this year...but has had it since 2007 at least. > > My MIL is moderate/advanced and just recently her bowel is not moving stuff > out until she's in a lot of discomfort etc. I won't go into more detail. > At Doc's direction we use Miralax every day which helped for about a month > but now though things are soft they still aren't moving. Guest guest
Hi Dorothy My son is missing half of his spine and he has lots of issues in this area. If you try a senna product, it causes the bowel to move things out. It can sometimes cause cramping, although my son never complains about that. He too could not use miralax. I've been told that you can use these two products together, but he doesn't need the miralax to soften since the senna does that for him. Enemas are also a way to help to clean out the lower bowel. You can use a Fleet enema which is just saline, and shouldn't irritate anything too badly. Good luck. Kathy Feedback on getting motility going? My MIL is moderate/advanced and just recently her bowel is not moving stuff out until she's in a lot of discomfort etc. I won't go into more detail. At Doc's direction we use Miralax every day which helped for about a month but now though things are soft they still aren't moving. Her doc suggests using duculax suppository to get things going - it irritates locally and that causes a reflex action to start up. Before I go there I'm wondering if anyone has other possible suggestions I could run by her doc? Or if anyone has tried this duculax and how does it work? If this is not appropriate for this list, please accept my apology - I am just trying to find how to manage these things and it seems like every week it's something new. My husband and I and two caregivers are managing her daily care here in our home. Thanks so very much Dorothy

Guest guest
Dorothy, Miralax is the miracle drug of choice for this problem for my mom. The dosage can easily be adjusted up or down each day as needed, and stirring it into juice is so simple. No nasty taste (like Milk of Magnesia) and no crushing senna tablets (Boy, are those things hard to crush?!?). The Miralax usually keeps her going every day or every other day. If, as happens every month or so, Mom hasn't had " success " by day 4, then she gets a Dulcolax suppository and that usually works in a few hours. Simple. Hope you find a routine that works for your mil. And please feel free to continue posting all the questions about LBD and its many manifestations, that you want here. We're all here learning and struggling together. Sheila in IN Daughter of Louise, age 88, dx LBD 7/2007 Seroquel 9AM- 37.5 mg, 3PM- 62.5 mg, 9PM -100 mg. Guest guest
Hi Sheila, Thank you I appreciate hearing this. I have been using the miralax for her each day which worked great for a few months but now it seems the little muscles must not be working well and even though it's all soft it's not moving out but accumulating. Her doctor suggested the ducolax suppository but because it could be irritating (and she is so sensitive) I was hesitant. It helps to know someone else is using this with good results. I'll go ahead and give it a try with her. I have tried milk of magnesia which was almost traumatic so don't want to go there again. Senna tablets were painful and I felt like I needed a tranquilizer by the time that ordeal was through. Another thing I've been trying are some of the physical therapy exercises she has - especially leg lifts and toe touches. Those work well when she's actively trying to have some luck. Guest guest
Hi Dorothy, Miralax stopped working for my Mom as the disease progressed. What seems to work for my Mom is 3 ExLax tablets every day at 4 or 4:30, and we cut up grapes for her, too. Every now and then we use a glycerin suppository (I think by Fleet). She goes pretty much every day.... Hope this helps. Guest guest
Be careful with the grapes...the skin can lodge against the airway...and I don't know if that would be a problem with your mom at this point. > > > > My MIL is moderate/advanced and just recently her bowel is not moving stuff > > out until she's in a lot of discomfort etc. I won't go into more detail. > > At Doc's direction we use Miralax every day which helped for about a month > > but now though things are soft they still aren't moving.
