I have a mom looking for info on Munchausen's..any stories or people who have been through this. Here is her message:

Can you please put a message out to the LIA community asking is anyone has enountered the Munchausen's or Munchausen's by Proxy diagnosis? If anyone has, please put them in touch with me by email (spacecoastlyme@...).

Thanks,

Munchausen is not a term you would see a psychiatrist and/or psychologist use

because it's not in the DSM IV TR as a coded diagnosis. But, the DSM IV TR says

that Factitious Disorder With Predominatly Physical Signs and Symptoms " has been

referred to as " Munchausen's syndrome. " "

Factitious Disorder, in the DSM IV TR, which is the official U.S. psychiatric

diagnostic manual, says, see page 513:

Criterion A: The intentional production of physical or psychological signs or

symptoms.

Criterion B: The motivation for the behaviour is to assume the sick role.

Criterion C: External incentives for the behavior are absent. (This basically

means that if the person is pretending to be sick for a gain, such as money,

than the diagnosis would be Malingering instead.

The DSM IV TR goes on to say that they usually have numerous hospitalizations

concering fake symptoms and occasionally, they purposely make themselves sick by

giving themselves infections on purpose. It gives good examples that a lawyer

could use in court to show that the accused is not doing.

For the subtype, With Predominatly Physical Signs and Symptoms, the following

apply:

Paraphrasing here: Signs and symptoms are present, but they are created by

using such things as drugs or intential self-harm. Those with the chronic form

have multiple surgical scars where docs did exploratory surgery to look for the

cause of the fake complaints. Thus, as you can see, a lawyer needs to get this

book, and then show that the peron does not meet the criteria. Munchausen's by

Proxy isn't even mentioned in the DSM IV TR. A good strategy would be to get the

DSM IV TR and copy these pages (513-517)and use that as a defense.

Love and prayers,

Heidi N
