Guest guest
My Father In Law is about to be placed into a memory care unit for Alzheimer. I feel so badly for both my MIL and my FIL. But it has gotten to the point where my MIL simply can no longer take care of him by herself. Mainly because he keeps running off! The first three times it was in his pick up truck and he would disappear over night!!!! The last of those 3 times he ended up being dropped off at the Oklahoma City county jail and didn't have a CLUE where his pick up was. By the Grace of God it was found that same evening on the side of the highway in a neighboring town. He should have never been driving in the first place but he would sneak out in the middle of the night and always manage to find the keys!!! Well, this time we all told him that he had lost his truck. Period, end of story. Or so we thought. Then he began venturing out on foot!! Argh!! The final straw was night before last, when he disappeared late in the evening, in the middle of a thunderstorm. We were all out driving around drenched like wet rats looking for him when 2 hours later we received a call from my MIL stating that she went back by the house just to see if he had come back home and WHALLLAAAH! there the little rascal was! So, anywho, she has made arrangements today for a room. Tomorrow she will be taking my FIL to lunch while some of the workers from the memory care unit will go to their home to pick up some furniture to be placed into his new room. My hubby is going to leave work early to go with his mother to take his dad to his new residence but he is really dreading it....sigh......I am unclear as to what the plan is. I mean, do they just show up at this place and walk him in and then the staff pounces on him with syringes of knock out med's??? Because I assure you that he will not be there willingly once he figures out what is going on. Poor man.... I do have a question for the group. Do the bad med's that are not good for LBD patients apply to Alzheimer patients? What should I have my MIL request for him to keep him calm yet not keep him a stupor 24/7. My FIL is physically very healthy, that is, so far. Hugs, Pammie, proud daughter of the " Little Queen " , 78 years old, Diagnosed with LBD in the fall of 2007, currently taking Exelon Patch, Namenda,Avapro,Verapamil ER, Nexium, Tarazadone and Boneva.
