When hubby and I went to lunch today, one of the specials was meatloaf, mashed potatoes and broccoli casserole. It was cold outside and I wanted comfort food, so I ordered the meatloaf. I did get the mashed potatoes, but substituted mixed veggies for the casserole. I forgot to tell her " no gravy " , so the meatloaf and potatoes had gravy on them. I ate all the meatloaf but left part of the potatoes. I told hubby that my bg's would probably be high. The meal was good, just what I needed. After eating, I did go shopping - walked up and down the escalator a couple of times. Two hours later, bg's were 72. I could not believe that so checked again and got a reading of 79. I would never eat this kind of meal unless I knew I would be doing some type of exercise afterwards. Hugs Eunice

When I decided I wanted off meds, I was eating less carbs, but after losing about 25 lbs, I started getting lows about every two hours. That is when my doctor took me off the meds. Since then, I've gradually added more carbs, but it seems like in the past month or so, I need more carbs but with less exercise. I know it doesn't make sense, but I'm not complaining. I do eat small portions 4 or 5 times a day. The first year I was diagnosed, I wasn't serious about diabetes, did not test, did not keep records. When I decided I wanted off the meds, I started keeping better records, testing at least twice a day, sometimes 3 times if I have a " new " food. Since I've started keeping records, I've only had two readings above 200. I went to a Christmas party, ate a slice of apple pie and no exercise after eating. My bg's were 238. The next morning, my fasting bg's were 68. The other reading was 215 after dinner and the next morning my fasting was 77. I have never had a fasting reading over 105 since I've been testing - most of the time high 70's to low 90's. When I started losing weight, I still ate carbs. I was also drinking a lot of hot green tea, don't know if this had anything to do with my weight loss or not. I lost about 2 lbs per week, except for a few weeks when I was eating more protein and less carbs. That did not work for me. You may want to add more carbs into your meals and see what happens. I don't count carbs, calories, etc, so I really don't know how many carbs I eat. I do know I eat smaller portions. For instance, if I'm at a dinner where they have macaroni/cheese, I'll have a spoonful. I don't need the large amount of food that I was eating before diabetes. A spoonful of blackberry cobbler, a bite or two of a slice of pie or cake satisfies me. When I bake cookies, I'll eat part of one cookie, then later (maybe an hour), I'll eat the rest of it. Just take it one day at a time. If you get a high reading, don't let it stress you. That will only lead to the next reading being high. If you do get a high reading, then have lower carbs for the next meal. I hope this information helps. You will reach your weight goal and your bg's will get to normal. Just don't let it stress you. Guest guest
Eunice, I am going to try just doing the very small portions like you did. I will try it and test after. I am assuming that you had bites of the bad stuff and small portions of the good stuff. Did you eat until you were comfortable? Did you eat until you were > comfortable? > Hi Betty, That is the way I would eat. Maybe more carbs if I was going to exercise after eating. Eat until you are comfortable. Don't overeat, which is what I did before diabetes. Some things I do: I don't eat breakfast until around 10:30 or 11:00, so I check email, read the paper, drink coffee before breakfast. After breakfast, I do the housework. After lunch, I find something to do such as yardwork, going for a walk or finishing up housework. As I said, my dinner is light carbs, usually a salad with protein. I do not want to do more exercise after eating dinner. Something that I have been eating recently and is really good. I buy the pre-cooked chicken breasts (Sam's Club) and the frozen veggies. I'll saute the veggies in olive oil. I thaw the chicken, then cut it up and heat it with the veggies. Sometimes I'll add garlic and/or soy sauce to this. Makes a great meal. Keep us posted. Hugs Eunice
Guest guest
Eunice, in the 4 months that I have been diagnosed as diabetic, I have NEVER had a reading of 72 or 79. I never go under 100, usually way over that even if I don't eat most of the day. Why do you think that you are able to eat so many foods ? Why are your BGs so much lower than the rest of us? As I said before, I am incredibly carb resistant right now. I eat very, very low carb. Do you think eating low carb causes more carb resistance? If so, how will I ever be able to work more carbs back into my WOE????? I really would love to be able to eat more normally. I hit a weight plateau and stayed at the same wight for 3-4 weeks. So, for the last 3 days, I have been eating zero carbs and the weight has started to come off again. It is an extremely difficult way to go but I am determined to get the weight off so my BG numbers will be lower. I went frm an Ac1 upon diagnosis of 9.4 to 6.3, three months later. I still want to go lower. Guest guest
Eunice, You don't get shaky with bg's in the 70's? I guess mine have been so high in the past that 70's are a shock to my body. I get all shaky and weak if they are that low. Good job for you to be able to eat that meal and keep your sugars down. Guest guest
Hi Eunice, I am going to try what you do. So you try doing some kind of activity after you eat a meal with more carbs. Right? If you don't want to do something after you eat, you eat a very low carb meal. I usually walk 30 minutes a day and it is before breakfast. Actually I don't even like eating breakfast. So putting it off till later would work for me. It could be brunch. I am going to start this today. I had coffee so far. I will let you know how I make out and I appreciate your sharing. My motto is " If I want carbs, I have to work for them. " Some people can exercise before eating and that will help to reduce their bg's. Doesn't work for me. My exercise has to be after I eat. We all have to find the right combination that works for us. I never tell anyone how or what to eat. I only share what works for me. I hope this plan works for you. Do keep us posted. Guest guest
Carol, I started out with 1 mile in am after bf and 1 mile at night after dinner. I would do it during the week. Take weekends off. This would kinda regulate me so my sugar would burn even with out walking(on weekends) How much and far do you walk? ~**~ Re: Re: [diabetes Eating carbs In a message dated 11/2/2002 11:56:05 PM Eastern Standard Time, PLinderman@... writes: > > Debbie, You can do it! watch the carbs and walk.
