Exercise raising BS level?

Suzee,

It's not surprising that your bg's rise after exercising. Remember, while

exercising, you're using up the glucose / energy being carried around in

your blood. As you continue to exercise, your body needs to replace that

sugar and hence it draws upon the liver where glucose is stored as glycogen.

Your liver then releases glycogen into your bloodstream (sometimes referred

to as a sugar dump) to replace the sugar that was used up during exercise,

otherwise you'll bonk, or " hit the wall " . So, if you take a bg reading right

after exercising, it might be high. However, several hours and even days

after, you should see your bg's drop. I once took a bg reading (around 115)

before I went on a 35mile bike ride and when I took it right after my ride

it was around 180! I wasn't concerned because I knew throughout the day my

bg's would be dropping. Other times, however, right after exercising, it's

low so go figure.

The important thing to remember is that continued exercising WILL improve

your bg readings and most importantly, improve your health. Keep it up.

Thank you for your thoughts on this. I have found that my highest

readings are in the mornings upon rising and higher after breakfast. Then I

have a hard time the rest of the day getting it back down. So I decided to

do an experiment and have only protein for breakfast, then 30g of carbs for

lunch and for dinner. My numbers were all normal today!!! Maybe I've come

across something...... Suzee

Hi Suzee,

The one thing about diabetes is that it effects all of us differently. I can

eat more carbs than a lot of other people, but I have to eat them at

breakfast and lunch when I know that I will be doing some type of exercise

(housecleaning, yard work, walking, etc) after eating. Dinner for me is

usually a salad, sometimes with protein or stir-fry veggies with chicken. I

have never noticed my bg's going up after exercising. Also, exercising

before eating does not help to keep my bg's lower. Has to be done after

eating. Even when I have high bg's, they are back to normal in less than 3

hrs after eating.

Once you find out what food plan works, diabetes is a lot easier to control.

Thanks

Second day of numbers in normal range. :) This is a first since I was

diagnosed. The only thing is I'm wondering how healthy this is. 15 g of

carbs per meal is not a lot. I'm thinking of calling my dietitian and asking

her about this. I don't think she would want me to eat more and then have to

take more drugs. This is very unbalanced, but I'm not hungry and feel ok

with it.

My doctor recommended that I go to the Diabetes Center which is located at

our local hospital. I saw the dietitian there who discussed my diet and

carbs etc, then I saw the nurse who showed me how and when to test my blood.

I can call them for up to a year with any questions or problems. Most

insurances will cover this.

The only problem was that the dietitian started me with 45 g of carbs per

meal. I told her this was more carbs than I was used to eating at that time.

<I don't think she believed me> So I started with the 45 g and my numbers did

not budge, even with drugs. I keep decreasing carbs on my own and I think 15

g might be my number. I think it's very low, but I guess everyone is

different. This has been a real challenge.

I need a dietician. Did your doctor send you to one, or did you find

one on your own?

I'm glad to hear it's not just me that can only eat 15 g per meal. I won't

have to feel sorry for myself. :) GOOD LUCK

My doctor told me he wanted me to go and I got on here and found this list

and someone mentioned Joslin and I called them and set it up. I'm SO glad I

did. The training was excellent and it gave me a good foundation to build

on. The diabetes education is really the beginning though. There is so much

more to learn and this group has helped a lot with that... and the internet.
