Guest guest
hi Mohan, yes, your symptoms do sound in keeping with bronch, and yes blood in sputum is not uncommon, especially if not treating infx. Blood may be an indicator there is underlying infx, but not always. Sometimes it can be from the hard coughing most of us do because of the sputum there, small capillaries break and ooze a little blood, not serious in itself, I'm told, tho can be alarming at times! hope this helps, joy h PS - have you been in the group a while I don't recognise your name
Guest guest
Hi Joy,Thanks a lot for the valuable information.I joined the group a couple of months ago but was not active. My bronch seems to be in an initial stage. Though I was diagnosed almost a year ago I am not on any medication. I did try some inhalers for a couple of months but then gave them up as there was hardly any change in the condition.Mohan PantFrom: Joy To: bronchiectasis Sent: Friday, 15 July 2011 5:51 AMSubject: Re: bronch symptoms hi Mohan, yes, your symptoms do sound in keeping with bronch, and yes blood in sputum is not uncommon, especially if not treating infx. Guest guest
Hi, Lee, I'm curious. Did I read on one of your mails that you don't take medicine? I take Advair and I want to get off. It's doing so much damage to my body. Arthritis and cataracts and glucoma. Is there anything at all out there that can help? Like you, I'm not bad. I've never coughed up blood. If I take Mucinex once a day, it does help. Is that too much to take? I was wondering how you manage your condition if you don't take serious medicine. I would like to do that. Guest guest
Hello all I too take little or no medication for bronch. I don't cough much either (probably due to codeine I take for back pain though, and my bronch is not that productive just an eggcup of mucus a day maybe. I have mucinex to take as and when I feel I need it which is not that often. I try and avoid dairy which makes mucus sticky, drinking water helps keep it thin and ginger tea is wonderful. I do my active cycle of breathing exercises every day and use the acapella as and when (I couldn't get on with the flutter). I don't use any inhalers as my consultant was very definite they don't help with bronch and they are not good for anyone long term. I had a huge programme of re-training to learn to manage the condition when I was first diagnosed, that involved breathing exercises, stop drop flop if its getting to much, percussive physio as and when and a hot-line to the consultant/physio if I feel bad. Also I keep anti biotics in the house to start if feel like I have any sort of infection coming on so I don't have to wait for a doctors appointment. I find cold damp weather makes me worse as does too hot dry weather, living in England the damp is an issue but can't do anything about that. I fancy the climate in the South of France may help but one can only dream!!! Like most of you some days I feel OK and some days I feel so tired I can't do anything but on the whole I get by OK. I'm grateful that my bronch does not seem as advanced as some on here...........one thing the doctors drummed into me at the start is the key to it not to get infections, every one knocks you back and each time the lungs get a little worse. I'm lucky I work from home so I can isolate myself from all those office bugs. I take my bronch seriously and put effort into trying to keep well......not always successfully of course! Keep well and happy everyone. Liz > > > Hi, Lee, I'm curious. Did I read on one of your mails that you don't take medicine? I take Advair and I want to get off. It's doing so much damage to my body. Guest guest
Hi yes thats right I dont take anything at all. I was on puffers preventers and relievers couple of years ago. I had a few tests and they found the ventolin made me worse and nothing helped. My throat was always hoarse. he said that when i cough he can hear it loosen the noise in my chest and yet I have never coughed anything up maybe if I am sick a tiny amount of mucous. I keep antibiotics on hand just in case. and also Bisolvon medicine or tablets from over the counter at the chemist. They loosen any phlemn if I need to.I do get a bad cough every morning and some days a bit breathless but I have also gained alot of weight which dr wont be happy when he sees me for my checkup. I have a thyroid problem and hernia and after caring for my elderly parents never got any exercise in. they are both in care now from broken hips but I still go every 3 rd day as I dont think my mother will be here much longer. Guest guest
hi Mohan, how were you diagnosed? You may have a scan or x-ray which shows signs of bronch being there, thankfully it sounds like it's not affecting you too much. However (sorry to say this!) it is degenerative and progressive - usually quite slowly unless something a bit drastic happens... So it is good to keep an eye on things, any changes, if you get chest colds more often, that kind of thing. Even tho I've had bronch 40+ years, I haven't always been on meds, nor am I now - only if have a specific infection. It's basically not good practice to overdo the antibiotics. Just keeping as fit and active as poss is the absolute best 'treatment' until maybe you're older or need more than what exercise will do - then doing saline nebuliser, Flutter valve, Acapella can help loosen mucus so it's not stuck down there - which is how infx get a hold. cheers, joy PS - sorry I missed recognising your name - I must have missed seeing it when I checked through my log.... glad you're with us. Guest guest
hi - unless have infx, there's no need for abx. The others are 'maintenance' meds, to keep mucus loose enough to clear without forced coughing. There are 'meds' such as saline or Mucomyst that can be nebulised, or oral mucus thinning medicine, or devices such as an Acapella ore Flutter valve, but until past decade a bit of gardening did all of these fine. It was only as the infx increased & my own health didn't allow me the same activity I started needing aids. While managing good maintenance I don't need antibiotics (serious meds) unless have a bout of infx brought on usually by something specific. Guest guest
thanks, Joy, the reason the doctor started me on the bactrim years ago, was because I was getting pneumonia twice a year. Since I started this regimen six years ago, I have not had one infection. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, at my age, I have to be careful. I'll be 81 this year and so far I'm doing fine. This group has been a big help to me. To: bronchiectasis From: endiandra@...Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2011 12:27:50 +1000Subject: Re: bronch symptoms hi -unless have infx, there's no need for abx. Guest guest
Hi - I was interested in your email because of taking Bactrim 2 x wk. for 6 yrs. It sounds like you have found the right combination. I was also wondering how long have you had bronch.? & do you use a nebulizer and the Vest also? I have been doing well for about 5 months, so for the last 2 nights, I did not do the Vest and used the Acapello instead. Yesterday, while doing the Vest in my afternoon session I coughed up the ugly green stuff. Live and learn.......I somehow keep thinking that I am going to get better. It is a full time job to try and stay healthy with this disease. Guest guest
Sharyn, I guess you might say I'm one of the fortunate ones. I have had this for about 20 years but was diagnosed about 15 years ago. It was never too severe. I had been getting pneumonia about 2x a year and never realized I had an underlying condition. As for symptoms, I would just get a lot of mucous and cough. I did get infections a few times. That's when my doctor gave me ct scans and decided to put me on bactrim 2x a week. So far, my mucous is containable and I haven't had any infections. Then he retired and I decided to go with a pulmonologist. He decided I should use Advair. It did make me more confortable but lately I've been feeling the effects of it. I looked it up and everything it warns about, is happening to me. My RA got very bad, and I developed cataracts and glucoma. I quit the advair about a week ago, and already I'm able to manage stairs and walking better. I am taking Mucinex once a day to control my mucous and that, also, is working for me. Maybe it's too soon to pass judgment, but so far I'm happy with the results. I guess we all have to work with our own bodies, we know what's best for us. I'm totally convinced the bactrim is helping me immensely. Guest guest
Hi , I just accidentally sent an e-mail with no message to you. I am having computer problems and probably need to give in and get a new one. I wanted to agree with you that we need to know our own bodies. I could not take advair, it just made me worse. I try to stay healthy and do take mucinex daily as well as a claritan and natural supplements.Even though I am not allergic to gluten for some reason when I have any food with gluten, I become very wheezy. I think all of us just try so hard to stay healthy as long as we can. The vest really seems to be helping me. Cindi W. Guest guest
Hi, Cindi, we do have to experiment with our bodies. Probably what you can handle, I can't and vice versa. But by trial and error, we can come up with a program that will help us. You sound as tho you're on the right track. I will try to stay away from harsh medicines and use supplements etc. I have found out that I feel better when I do that. That's interesting about the gluten. I, also wonder if I may have a slight allergy to it. I seem to get more congested when I eat it. Again, trial and error. Hope you can solve your computer problems. What did we do before computers??? Guest guest
- I am so happy for you in that you have not gotten worse over the years with your bronch. I am thinking, the Bactrim must be the answer for you. I took Advair for several years per a Dr. in Denver, but took myself off of it because of the bad side effects - sorry to hear you have developed cataracts and glaucoma. When I see my Dr. in August I will ask him if he thinks I should try the Bactrim. Right now we are suffering in the Midwest with heat and humidity so don't go outside at all. The humidity is bad for me. Thanks for all the information Sharyn Subject: RE: bronch symptomsTo: bronchiectasis Date: Tuesday, July 19, 2011, 2:48 AM thanks, Joy, the reason the doctor started me on the bactrim years ago, was because I was getting pneumonia twice a year.
