Sorry it's taken me SO long to get back to you. The Cortisone shot was just kind

of a general question. I just remember the shots in my back 20+ years ago...and

the immediate relief afterwards. I'm not thinking about the shots anymore. Nor

am I taking MS-Contin. Within 2 days (and just 2 pills) I felt like I had a

horrible flu and headache. I went back to Oxcarbazepine. It doesn't help much

but I get no horrible side effects. I see the Dr. later this month and I'm going

to ask him about Savella. He had mentioned it but prescribed the MS-Contin

instead.

>Cortisone shot where? The docs are against the shots (some of them) because

they feel the steroids are not good for you. I am on pain meds around the clock,

and they help me more than the shots.

The pain docs are funny... some are more injection only, others are pain meds...

I have one doc that does the injections (buttocks trigger points every 2 months)

and another that prescribes the pain meds. In my experience seeing 30+

physicians before finding someone stable they are either for one or the other.

The Savella is approved for Fibro. It has helped with joint pain, light/noise

sensitivity... I have not had any side effects. If you have any of those issues

I would ask about it for sure.

I'm on Oxycontin now and Morphine IR.

Hi ,

I'm most likely coming in on this conversation way late, so I apologize.  When

was your surgery? Mine was March 30th of this year and I am seeing a Pain

Management Specialist. He has me on hydrocodone and several meds for anxiety. I

live in Tallahassee FL, and had my surgery in Gainesville FL because none of the

doctors in Tally have delt with TSC. I'm wondering if the Pain Mgmt. Sp. thinks

this is all in my head.

Have you dealt with doctors like this?

Kellie,

My surgery was in November 2011. I was misdiagnosed for about 2 1/2 years, and

walked around with bladder issues and severe lower back pain. Yes, I have been

to hell and back with pain physicians.I finally found a clinic in Chicago that

" gets it " . Right before surgery I started developing knots everywhere, to the

point of numbness. Then came the light/noise issues. Feb of this year the joint

pain started. In March someone finally thought that my symptoms were due to

sensitization. My brain was not processing pain correctly. I was diagnosed with

central sensitization syndrome (kind of like fibro) and given Savella.

As for the back pain. I was told by Dr. Frim who did my surgery that he can't

say it will ever go away, I walked around with it for so long, the surgery may

not change anything. He told me to do the surgery based on my bladder (nerve

damage confirmed by study) and the leg damage...

Are you having all over pain or just lower back?I hear of so many people

developing " fibro " like symptoms after prolonged pain :(

Hi ,

Funny you should ask that; I was doing some research before I received your

email.  Yes, I have pain and numbness through my right leg and arm. I have

knots in the right side of my lower neck and upper back. I've started having

headaches too. I thought this was strange since my tether was between L4 and

L5.  I have made a friend in south Florida who has been though this as well.

She recommends that I find a good Internist. Have you had any experience with

this type of doctor?

Thank you for sharing your experience,

Kellie

I can't imagine an internist having the requisite experience with NTDs to

handle it. Internists are generally PCPs (primary care physicians). I think

u would b much better served by a physiatrist (also listed under " Physical

Medicine & Rehabilitation " in most insurance lists of covered providers).

They specialize in treating and managing ppl w disabilities. The best would

b to find one who specializes in ppl with SCI/D and/or spine & brain. A

physiatrist who specializes in SCI/D is kind of like a PCP of SCI/D -

managing pain and other symptoms; referring out treatment as necessary (ie:

PT, OT, urology, etc).

If u have a MSCIC (Model Spinal Cord Injury Center) close by, they should

have many of these MDs on staff that are very experienced in treating SCI/D.

Just MHO.
