Control freaks usually do well with their DM.....except for unpredictable colds, flu, emotional stress, dawn phenomonen, accidental (or non-accidental )exposure to foods that make you test high, etc........ My dr agrees that a bit of compulsive behavior makes for a well controlled diabetic! I think Vicki's daughter told her that she had the right disease for her personality....I hope I got that right. Guest guest
Pat- Yes. Those jelly beans and chocolate are the kiss of death :-) I used to go up that high with a glass of milk. You should test 1 hr after eating and then 2 hrs after eating. <<i waited two hours, and it read 248. i'm guessing that the jelly beans/chocolate have got to go. but does this sound correct? can numbers change that much with food? i'm soooooo confused. i'm gonna check some sites now and going to bed. tomorrow will be better. pat>>

Guest guest
Well, yes, Pat, after the jellybeans, etc.....those high numbers would indicate diabetes, I think someone without diabetes would still have a reading around 100 2 hours after lots of jellybeans. Oh well, at least now you know to stay away from jellybeans! (smile) And it sounds like you worked out how to make the meter and lancet work properly. Vicki PS: And yes, numbers can change radically in a half hour even if you're diabetic. For instance, to treat a low (anything below 65) it is recommended you take glucose tabs. Each one raises BG about 20 points. I've hypoed to 45...taken two glucose tabs and been at 85 30 minutes later. (They're supposed to do that!) BTW, if you ever do go hypo, this is a good way to treat it. Don't take anyone's advice that says to drink orange juice -- the glucose tabs work faster than food and are more precise too. V. When I was diagnosed my daughter pointed out that at least I got a disease that perfectly matched my personality...and she was right. The people who have problems with diabetic control are those who aren't compulsive about testing and eating properly.

In addition to recording your readings, keep a diary of how you FEEL, both physically and emotionally. Make sure to take readings, record them, and keep an honest diary not only when you eat " good " stuff but also whenever you eat " bad " stuff. In time you'll learn that bad foods don't really make you feel good, in the long run. Good foods feel good both physically and emotionally. It takes time to relearn eating. We've grown up thinking that junk food is some kind of reward, possibly because of things like birthday parties, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. Eating well, though, can feel good because we know we're REALLY nourishing ourselves. It also feels good physically! T
