When Caroline and I reached her parents home on Monday, I asked them to join

us in the living room, both of them. With Caroline sitting beside me, I told

them of our plans to be married this May, which they already knew, and that

in preparation for that day I would like to have their permission to carry

through with our plans. They were very pleased to have me ask, and readily

provided their approval. I think Caroline's Mom was especially pleased to be

included in the process. I then gave her Dad the bottle of Glenmorangie

Single Malt Scotch and he poured us all a small shot. We enjoyed the taste

and savoured the moment.

Now we have to plan the ceremony itself. It's going to be small, family and

perhaps a few friends, in our backyard. Small, because Caroline's immediate

family is about 30 people; she has 8 siblings, only two of which are not

married. All but two of the married siblings have children.

To help clear things up a bit, Caroline and I have been together since 1995,

May 24 will be 7 years. I've been married once before and didn't really

consider doing this again. But Caroline asked me. Since I'm now healthy and

expected to live for a few more years, and most importantly, she is the most

wonderful woman, I agreed that it's worthwhile to formalise our

relationship.
