thank you cheryl, whenever we go to the doctor, he always check for swelling, but it just started a few days ago. i'm trying to get him to go to the doctor earlier instead of waiting for two more weeks. the doctor has told us that he will get his transplant within three to six months. i just got scare when i seen his stomach swelling so much. our prayers are always with everyone in the support group. thank you, sandy

Sandy,

You have to get that checked by the doctor. My swelling

was not acites. It was caused by my UC. My legs have swelled for months

before dx. It coudl be acites, but it might respond to the diuretics. Good

luck with it. Cheryl ID 43, PSC, UC

This is best checked by a doctor -- you might want to make a call early

tomorrow!

sandy, see what the doctor says about all the swelling, but don't overlook

the obvious -- like the amount of sodium in the diet... the amount of water

he is drinking daily... etc.

we wish you the best,

maureen & jim -- jim, UC '84, PSC '96 (elevated LFTs since '84); north

coastal san diego county, CA; Living Related Transplant 12/7/01 (thanks to

our wonderful donor son jason, 23) <-- i still shake my head in absolute

awe at finally being able to type these last words! :-)

Sandy,

Edema (swelling in the feet and hands) and acities are common

symptoms as liver function decreases. I assume that is in

the later stages of PSC since a transplant is expected soon.

Still the swelling and corresponding weigh gain should be fairly

gradual, not a sudden expansion. Going on a low salt diet may

help a little, but if the swelling is pronounced as you say, the

doctor may want to prescribe diuretics to help eliminate the

fluids.

Because you say this swelling was relatively sudden, you should

at the very least report it to the doctor. There may be a cause

other than PSC for the swelling that should be treated.
