Well, Pam, I have very limited experience being diabetic less than 3 mos.

For me, if I try a new food and it brings me up 40 or 50 points in 1 hour, I

want to know that. That way, I'll probably eliminate it.

I guess with a 6.4 you ae doing all the right things.

Pam, I am so inexperienced at this point, that I tstay away from most

foods. I don't want any high spikes, but maybe that is impossible. I guess

what I am trying to figure out is how you can have regualr coke, Eunice can

eat just about anything she wants, and right now, I can hardly tolerate any

carbs at all. It is all very confusing for me. I wish one size fit all so

it would be easier.

OK, what I don't understand is: If you eat something and it spikes high at

one hour, does that mean that you should not eat that even if it comes

within normal ranges at 2 hours????? That is a really big question for me.

Eunice or others, jump in here and let me know. I am desperately trying to

keep my numbers low. So I figured if I spiked at one hour that I should not

eat that again RIGHT??????

Pam, I came to the conclusion that carbs just don't work for me by testing

Right now, if I eat anything with more than a few carbs, I get a high

reading. I am trying to stay very low carb right now. I hope that when I

lose a few more pounds that I can handle more carbs.

I used to eat very high carb before the Dx. I have found that if I limit my

carbs my BG numbers stay pretty low. That is what I am trying to strive

for.

I know it is early for me but I am so freaked by the complications so I

want to do everything right ASAP.

I'm a type " A " personality - maye that is part of my problem.

Hi ,

This sounds right to me. Maybe it's not so much what we peak at, but how

quickly we come back down to normal. Regardless of what my bg's are at 1 hr

or 2 hrs, within 3 hrs after eating, they are going to be back to normal. I

have heard other people say it will take many hours for their bg's to get

back to normal.

That is really a great attitude. It is good to realize you are not perfect,

but that you will try and do better. We can't always be perfect but we can

learn and try next time.

Once you get stabilized and get your bg's under the best control they can

be, you can try to add little things here and there. It takes time and

patience, but it can work. Some of us will never be able to tolerate much.

But our bodies and our systems are all different. Remember that what works

for one may not work for another. Keep trying and have patience. You are

doing great.

If I am not mistaken, if it comes in close to normal at 2 hours, that is

good. Someone else might have different ideas or their doctor told them

something different. I have learned here that all doctors do not believe

the same thing. How high is it at 1 hour and then at 2 hours? At 1 hour, I

think it is supposed to be at it's peak and at 2 hours is how your body had

processed it. Someone please correct me if that isn't correct.

I have the American Diabetes Assasisiating book and I went to a top

diatition at Stanford...and she and the book both say that we count

carbs and its ok to have sugar as long as you test...:) and you passed

the test...sus

How fun..Real LIVE coke.wow..we don't have the small little cans

here...but I will be on the look out for them.

PLUS.you have lost weight and your body now can handle more carbs!! Not

all diabetics are in the severe category..some are just insulin

resistant because of the weight and once they loose it they can handle a

bit of carbs..

This is what I was told.and so far belive it..sus

Gosh I remember last summer. Before I found out my body was not using my

insulin!! We had a real hot summer with NO air conditioning and I would

pour coke/pepsi after pepsi and real sprite after real sprite....and

even after all that my first A1C test 6.7...

Now I drink only diet but I do miss the real pepsi !! YUM with ice...sus

I'm not trying to become a " Ken " like character I remember the whole

soda issue. Even if I have one once a week which I am more inclined

to do I get a treat - fix that enormous jones I've had for the whole

two years I've been diagnosed and feel better. It's a trade off, I'll

further stream line my diet for the coke.

re: real Coke

Anything that is " all sugar carbs " would peak long before 2 hours, maybe

in

as little as 10-20 minutes, depending, of course, on your metabolism and

the amount/rate at which your T2 system still produces insulin. For a T1

(producing no natural insulin), which I am, " real " Coke (or OJ or nearly

anything " all sugar " ) could be used to " medicate " a hypo because the

sugar

action is so fast.
