I was 19 at the time. Still figured that by asking my mom about it I was gonna get the truth. Anyway.. we talked one day about what women did to trigger miscarriages...... She ran down about a dozen different ways women used to get rid of pregnancies, she was born in '23. A lot of women got pregnant a lot of the time and they didn't make it a public thing, no doctors.. they did it at home. One of the most common, she said, was getting drunk in a hot tub of water.... They would fill a tub with water just as hot as they could stand it and then get in. Then they would drink cheap wine until they passed out. They could only do this one with a lady friend around.... the lady friend would drag them out and they would miscarry. Two reasons to be dragged out of the water.. to make sure that their heads didn't go under and the drown.. And by drinking in the hot water what they were doing was letting the heat cause the alcohol to go to toxic levels, so they were subjecting themselves to alcohol poisoning. Pulling them out of the water took away the heat and how ever the chemistry worked, kept them from dying until the booze was out of their systems. To my mind, if women were going through all that stuff to stop being pregnant.. and then getting pregnant again.. they must have been having a lot of fun. On my coffee table, was a couple of catalogs. Now you know if you have ever ordered from Secret, that you get on a mailing list.
