Great job, Jackie! You nearly cut your A1c in half just this Summer!!

If you're going to buy a treadmill or other cardio machine, buy a great one but

also buy it used. Good rule for buying anything worthwhile: buy your last one

first!

I like Elliptical. But there are no good home choices in ellipticals that even

come close to the home choices available for treadmills. So if you buy an

elliptical, you're going to pay big money for a commercial machine. Precor

Elliptical machines are very sturdy ... one of my favorites is the Precor 546

Elliptical Trainer. What's an elliptical? It is a no impact treadmill/bike.

It has pedals that go in an oval instead of a circle. There is no seat and the

action is more like walking and jogging than pedalling. You can also stand

upright and swing your arms normally. This machine lists for over $5,000 new

but used it's less than half of that.

As for home treadmills, this quote is from Consumer Reports, which is an

unbiased test company -- again, the prices here are for new. I suggest you buy

used:

The Life Fitness T3, $2,200, is the best choice overall. It is especially easy

to use, has a powerful motor, and is well built. Another excellent choice is the

Reebok ACD4, a relative bargain at $1,850. It has many features found in more

expensive models, and its top speed (12 mph) and 5-foot-long belt make it

appropriate for serious runners. The stout Precor M9.33 bears a passing

resemblance to the massive treadmills found in health clubs, is loaded with

features, and has a large, runner-friendly belt--but it costs $3,000.

Diabetics are directed to do " weight bearing " exercises. Treadmills and

Ellipticals are weight bearing. Bicycles are not.

Are your hot days also humid? If not, can you put on damp clothes before you

work out outside? Damp clothes cool naturally as they dry.

I myself joined a health club. I do 45 minutes Elliptical and 30 minutes of

weightlifting.

I'm feeling pretty happy with my latest A1C results!

Diagnosis last April 20 - 9.2

Six weeks ago - 6.2

Jacki,

That's incredible! My last A1c was also 9.2 -- if I am even half that

close by my next one, I'll be thrilled!! :-)

Robb,

I tried the Elliptical at my health club, as it looked like so much

fun.... it was, but my knees couldn't take it. I stick with the treadmill,

although I prefer to walk outside in nice weather. I wanted to buy a

treadmill to use at home, but the price kept me going to the health club...

I have a very reasonably priced membership :-)

Jacki,

Congrats on your A1C reading. As for exercise I have a

treadmill that I've been using a lot. I've also been losing

weight slowly. When I saw my dr before the visit on Sat I had

lost 3 lbs and was at 152. When I saw her on Sat and they

weighed me in my weight was 149.

Mom and I talked about where to do some of our walking b/c she

hasn't been doing any of it and she's noticing a big difference

now b/c of not walking. She can't use the treadmill b/c she's

afraid she will break it even though she's within the safe

weight range to get on it. As I reminded her eventually she

will be able to get on it and use it for exercise too.

The other thing I'm doing is also to make sure I drink lots of

water.

And that's in addition to my meds.

jJacki,

I am SO excited over your awesome A1c!!! You should be very proud of

yourself for all your hard work. The weight will come off, just be patient.

One thing that has helped me is I started doing what Eunice did and that is

to make one meal a big salad with protein on it... I usually have tuna or

chicken or fish with it. It makes a big difference. I use those fat free

croutons. Just be patient with yourself. I'm really impressed with your

numbers and hope mine are at least below 6.0 after all this Prednisone. I've

worked pretty hard for the last 3 months but these numbers I am having are

going to mess that up some. But even before the Prednisone, my numbers were

not as low as yours... so you have inspired me to do better and try harder.

5.0 WOW.

As for exercise, I walk on my treadmill after breakfast and lunch and

dinner... about 15 or 20 minutes when I can. If it is only 5 minutes, that

is better than nothing. Even 5 minutes of fast walking lowers my numbers.

:)

Yes!!!!

Now, I need to really focus on weight loss. I've been losing, but

very slowly. I know I need to exercise more. My exercise of choice is

walking the track at the local high school. But, the weather has been

SO hot lately... and I'm a Muslim woman who wears the headscarf, long

sleeves, long pants... so walking around in the humid and high temps

just doesn't work for me. I walk whenever it's not too hot and am

really looking forward to fall when I can get out more often.

I've heard the YMCA has an indoor track, but I've never been there.

I've also been contemplating getting a treadmill. Mall walking

doesn't work for me, due to my working hours.

What do you all do for regular exercise?

> What do you all do for regular exercise?

I walk my dog (6 months old, chow and malamute mix). He more pulls

me around than me walking. We have a 2 mile route, all sidewalks. I

walk at night when it is cooler since I live in Iowa and it's been

hot and humid here.

Congratulations, Jacki. It's encouraging to see someone lower their

A1c numbers. Keep it up. It will lessen your chances of

complications in the future.

I was diagnosed in May, a routine physical had my bg at 400+ (I might

have had some aspirin that day to send it that high, don't know for

sure). A1c was 11+. The next visit in June was 8+. I have another

appointment next monday, they didn't want a test beforehand, I

checked and the nurse said they could take blood at the office. My

bg has been within normal (70 - 120) with very few lower or higher

readings in the last couple of months.

My weight has been dropping, I was at 200 lbs in May, 190 in

June/July and 181 as of today. My goal is 165 (high end for my

height, even though I am a larger build) and don't have a real time

frame for that weight goal, maybe sometime early next year. I have

noticed when I eat yogurt and ice cream I lose weight, and when I

stop my weight stabalizes. The calcium must have something to do

with it.

I went to the doctor and told him I was tired all the time and didn't

have much energy, and he said " you got it backwards, I told you to

PRICK your FINGER 4 times a day "

Sorry, it's late and I'm tired.

Ice cream is my downfall. IF I ever started eating it and LOST WEIGHT, I

would die of happiness. :)

Hi Stan,

Congratulations on the lower (good) bg readings and also the weight loss.

You'll reach your goal. Keep up the good work.

That's good progress, Stan :-) My last A1c was 9.2 -- I'm hoping it's

much better the next time -- October.
