Hi Dr. :-)Thank you for asking. Alhamdulillah it went ok. though i can't say i do much justice to ur books when i do my 5-6 mins long speeches based on topics from them:-). The Act in a Nutshell Metaphor speech, when i reheared it (only 1 time), was 10 mins long. So i landed up cutting it short right then and there when i was delivering it. So, to me, i accidentally left out some imp. parts, but to the audience, they completely understood the message:-). This time, my intention was to go quite unrehearsed, coz in the past i have over-rehearsed from fear of blanking out coz of immense presentation/soical anxiety. Now i have realized that i'm much rather 'willing' to take the chance of blanking out, as over-rehearsing only increases my anxiety, not to mention i don't enjoy delivering, and the topic dosen't come out from the heart. What i am conveying to the audience, unless i practise it myself, the message will never come out right. So i leave out points, but my message came out clear:-). I was able to completely connect with the audience. My delivery, though not the best, did show my passion, and that's sucess for me right there:-). I usually do better when i give the same speech the 2nd time at my other tm club, as then i know how to organize it better. This was my 2nd speech about ACT at this TM. my first one was from ur book the happiness trap and it was about 'misconceptions about happiness', ur 1st chapter. The first time i delivered, it was over-reheared, and landed up more focused on trying to prevent blanking out, hence message was misunderstood. People thought i was preaching "positive thinking" . Then i delivered the same speech at the other TM, this time more organized, not memorised, not overly rehearsed, & while delivering even realized i went off from the written speech. It went GREAT. People loved it. i absolutely enjoyed it, what i enjoyed the most was being able to HAVE ALL that anxiety present, and YET be able to expereince so much more in that moment than just that immense anxiety. It was wonderful dr. harris. I won best runner up, the first place went to a speaker who is a prof. Maxwell coach. The evaluation by the club was GREAT. And the message was absolutely clear to eevryone. Great success, as 'goal' was achieved that day- to be able to practise psychological flexibility to the best of my ability:-)i have a 20 min speech coming up nov. 3rd at the other TM. i am extreeeemely nervous and excited:-). The head has given me special permission to deliver a 20 min speech, so i can get some practise b4 i do my 3 hr long lecture to the muslim community about ACT. my 20 min speech is gonna be about "act in a metaphor", same thing, but this time better organize the speech (i struggle with writing, organising skills, from not having taken any english comprehension/compostion classes here), & i am gonna introduce ACT 6 principles but make perhaps without heavily relying on definiing ACT terms (defusion, expansion, values) and wroking more on how simple to make it so i can connect with the people i am delivering to, & they can relate to it. Also MY BIG LECTURE, nov. 12th will be once again based on ur books Happiness Trap (which i just finihsed reading yesterday wooooohooooooo, my 1st act book finished) & from ur act made simple book, which i am in chapter 1 right now. Also i do simultanoeusly read dr. steven hayes "goum) & today i started dr. kelly wilsons "thing can go horribly..", and i havta admit i could have NEVER EVER understtod and appreciated dr. hayes and dr. wilsons wondereful style of writing IF i didn't have ur book to read first. Even now when i get stuck in any of the other books, i go back to happiness trap, read how u define a concept and then come back to the other books. so JAZAKALLAH KHAIR (thank you) for making reading so easy and INCREDIBLY ENJOYABLE even for someone like me, who earlier would much rather jump in the ocean with killer sharks, than pick up a book and read;). Now to my whole family's suprise, reading has actually become something i enjoy THE MOST, though i havta admit i am a veeeeeeeeery slow reader:-)....shooot my email is sooooo long...sorry!take care dr. harriswasalaam:-)-K Designs. To: ACT_for_the_Public From: russharris@...Date: Sat, 29 Oct 2011 21:23:16 +1100Subject: RE: Recovery Stories
