Guest guest
congrats Deb...I also would like to know where in Illinois..I currently dispatch for Morton Grove Illinois...I noticed Jim from Tricom from Illinois...anyone else from Illinois??? I just recently joined and this list is great. Alot of feedback is coming in. We are short staffed from 9 to 6 dispatchers, so I was interested in your 5 staff schedule solution, just in case another one leaves. We are joining a central dispatch in about a year, so our department stopped hiring when people left last year. I have been working 3-11 shift 75% of the time solo. I only dispatch police, but answer all phone lines, and handle the front desk, bonds and walk in and of course those wonderful female prisoner searches. Gotta say, once we go to central dispatch..that is one thing I will not miss. The funniest was me searching a lady that was 6 ft tall. I am only 5'2. Her and I had a good chuckle which made for an easy search. Sandy :-) Morton Grove Police Morton Grove, Illinois
Guest guest
Sandy, I'm in Illinois too. Just a small town in northern Champaign County, the area just above where Deb is going to dispatch to. Welcome to the group. Guest guest
Congratulations! I know what a relief it is, I tested for my job twice, and the process took close to a year, but it's yours now so enjoy it! Tina
Guest guest
Ref to getting the job -- Did any of you have to take polygraph tests? We did. I had to confess to stealing a pumpkin on Halloween 15 years ago. I was sweating bullets about that damn squash the whole week b4 the polygraph, like having to confess it was going to blow my chances of getting the job. The polygraph tester said he didn't think it would be any big deal, although the fact that I stole the pumpkin at *night* could be a sign that I have deceptive tendencies. Then he started laughing. The whole polygraph I wondered if he was being nice to me or if he was playing mind games to make me think he was nice so I would blab more. He had a related " story " for every infraction I confessed to -- or did he? Maybe HE was lying and telling me stories to put me at ease and get bigger confessions. Hmmm

It sounds like you have the drive to be great at whatever you choose (staying with it through the process is certainly commendable to anyone). Look forward to hearing more from you now.! Guest guest
Re: 911:: I got the job > Ref to getting the job -- Did any of you have to take polygraph tests? No polygraph. Only a written test, Oral board and a typing test. But I have taken a polygraph test for a job I had when I was younger and I know what you mean. Guest guest
Went through the same thing with my polygraph...two of 'em, well back into the '80's. Mr. Polygraph Examiner was just the nicest guy...he shared all kinds of stories about his checkered past with me, as I innocently answered his questions with the utmost of truth and clarity. Some of my questions then, which would probably not be asked in this day and time...and really made me wonder about just what the department felt like was important: " Have you ever had sex with animals? How about with children? Have you ever had a sexual experience with a person that is the same gender as you are? " " What is the most unusual sexual act you have ever been involved in? " This one came with a graphic story about a strip poker game Mr. Polygraph had been a stakes holder in, which provided me with all kinds of mental visuals I'd rather not have...the nightmares continue to this day. The questioning about sexual issues was at least as long as that regarding theft, integrity, violence and work experience. I guess I was either tame or wild enough to get employed, I'm still with 'em after 16 years. Guest guest
Chris...Too Funny!! While we're on the subject of weird questions, perhaps someone on this list will have the answer to a couple of questions that have been plaguing me. A few years back, for a security job, I had to take the MMPI test. The one question that has been perplexing me for a while, " ...do you have the urge to play with your feces? " Were they trying to find out if we were potty-trained, or is there some other disorder that this is indicative of? (Although I shudder at the thought of what it might be..) The most recent psych exam that I went through included the [true or false] question " ...stamp collecting and archery are my favorite hobbies... " -- anybody recognize what disorder this question would flag on? --Chris
