Guest guest
I dont think there is any " benefit " of taking Dilaudid over Morphine. They are both very strong drugs. So if you need something that strong take which ever one works better for you  I guess. Did they give a reason for the Dilaudid? Is it supposed to affect the bowel less or something? Or were they just trying to cover your post op pain. I did not take meds post op once I left the hospital so I am not a very good person to guide you. So the surgery helped your numbness and tingling but not the pain then? Subject: Dilaudid To: tetheredspinalcord Date: Sunday, December 5, 2010, 7:39 AM  I got 60 pills post op. Hate taking then! They are potent but only last an hour or 2. Is anyone taking? I was talking to pain clinic about switching to morphine immediate (like b4) Good idea? Or take it for 60 days? Guest guest
For post-op pain in the hospital during my last visit for my spinal fusion this year I was given dilaudid (iv) as I had such a hard time with the morphine after my TC surgery (room spins, etc...) -- I still had the spinning with this drug, so after a day they switched me to morphine and I had a worse time with that. Finally they got me onto oxycodone about day 3 and although it still wierds me out that was so much better for me. I was told that most people tolerate diaudid better than morphine but didn't work in my case. As for pain relief, I don't remember a difference between the two but it's all a blur now. I was given oxycodone in pills for post-op at home and that worked really well for me and could handle the side effects short term. Dee To: tetheredspinalcord From: livedream_believe@... Guest guest
ps - -- my post op pain for my spinal fusion was much worse than the TC surgery and the oxycodone was very effective at reducing the pain. Guest guest
Well I have been on morphine since September. I take ER and up to 3 immediate a day. It's the only drug that does not cause EXTREME itching (I would scratch till I bled) They have me the dilaudid in the hospital. And then some to take home. It's for severe incision pain. And severe leg pain (due to " nerve regeneration " ) I am a drug believer. I know some people are not. I have gotten off morphine as prescribed before so I don't have any worries. However the Dilaudid seems like a pointless drug right now since it lasts what? 2 hours? > >ps - -- my post op pain for my spinal fusion was much worse than the TC surgery and the oxycodone was very effective at reducing the pain. > >Dee > > > > > >> To: tetheredspinalcord >> From: deeinbc@... >> Date: Sun, 5 Dec 2010 08:55:31 -0800 >> Subject: RE: Dilaudid >> >> >> For post-op pain in the hospital during my last visit for my spinal fusion this year I was given dilaudid (iv) as I had such a hard time with the morphine after my TC surgery (room spins, etc...) -- I still had the spinning with this drug, so after a day they switched me to morphine and I had a worse time with that. Guest guest
-- have you tried oxycodone, did it give you itching too? Also, from what others have said in this group if your leg pain is nerve pain you may need a different type of drug that addresses nerve pain. I almost requested something else post-op as my leg pain was severe after this past surgery, the oxycodone made a big difference but not enough -- but luckily after a couple of weeks the leg pain became much better so I never did get around to getting a different drug specifically for nerve pain. If the morphine worked for you can you not go back on that? Dee To: tetheredspinalcord From: lilacs007@... Guest guest
I too am a great fan of drugs! LOL The narcotics kept my daughter in dream land for the first two days this past surgery so she missed the worst of it...she was off it within a week at home..also hydrocodone...highly recommend for those who don't suffer nausea..the constipation is always an issue for my girl but the pain relief has been great for post surgical. Guest guest
Personaly i hate morphine, all functions of you body get slower incl. you heart. Thats why i do not like it. it's better to get this if it is realy needed. On lyrica ore Neurotin (i have experinced this with both. You are able to do some work as household. After that (for me 15 - 20 i need rest for at least two hours.) JW Dilaudid >I got 60 pills post op. Hate taking then! Guest guest
I am unable to take Morphine as it just makes me throw up, violently.  I seem to have a worse reaction each time I take it so I consider myself allergic to it. I am able to take Dilaudid which I have been given IV in the ER and post surgically. It is effective for post op pain but does not help my nerve pain. As it is very similar in chemical makeup to Morphine I have to wonder does Morphine really help nerve pain? or does it just help the other pains...muscle spasms, achiness etc? I have enough trouble with my bowels and bladder without taking something like that to make it worse. I used to be able to do a bowel program when I needed to but now with the PN any type of penetration would be excruciating. When I was on Neurontin I had major memory loss, word searching, weight gain, and some other stuff that I cant remember right now, it helped the nerve pain a little...my doc has said he wants me back on it if the hysterectomy doesnt bring my pain levels down but I do not want to take it again. I do remember that I did not " feel " like it was effecting me much until I went off of it and accused the IRS of fraud because I did not remember making a contract with them which had been in effect on a monthly basis for years. I honestly do not think I should even have been driving while on it. Oh yes...lots of sleeping was another effect but I didnt wake rested, I was always foggy and tired. Subject: Re: Dilaudid To: tetheredspinalcord Date: Tuesday, December 7, 2010, 1:37 AM  Personaly i hate morphine, all functions of you body get slower incl. you heart.
