Interesting that you mentioned this. I just saw my gastro doctor a week ago to

get the test results from before Xmas. I did the swallowed sensor/transmitter

48 hr test. The results? I had had reflux 54 times in 48 hours and was only

aware of one time! I have what is called " silent reflux " . I'm on new meds

(can't remember name right now), and we're hoping this makes a difference in my

reflux. I see him again in 6 weeks - don't know if we repeat the test or not.

I understand your reluctance to give your young boys powerful meds and do

tests, bu they have a VERY serious disease at an early age and it must be

aggressively treated.

Acid reflux from stress caused my bronch, Janice. Deglyzzerized (not sure of spelling) licorice tablets (DGL) from natural health stores, slippery elm bark powder, from same source, and eating carefully weaned me of PPI's for all but rare flare ups. Sugar, vinegars, ice cream, anything really sweet of acidic, like wine, sodas, and some juices triggers my GERD. Had trouble recently from too many Christmas goodies as I baked (and ate) during the holidays.

The meds that shut off stomach acid completely are not good to take long-term. We need acid to keep bacterias and viruses at bay. Best of luck with your twins. I have adult identical twin daughters. Twins are lots of fun!

Kay reflux

Hi, I haven't been on here for ages, but have 11 yr old twins with bronchiectasis. We're able to control their bouts of illness better over time, but not always. My son is currently in hospital following a houseful of family colds, coughs, flu symptoms etc that of course gets him worse than the rest of us. He's being dosed up with everything they can think of and I hate it. Some time ago they said he has reflux (did a barium meal as we refused the 24 hr tube down the nose test) and he's on reflux medicine while in. We prefer a more natural medicine way of dealing with this at home(he's never complained of indigestion or acid) and I wondered if any group members have experience of reflux/natural ways to deal with it/any other opinions? Any advice would be very welcome. Thanks, Janice

hi Janice,

I've only had mild reflux, no meds. BUT I make sure I never do

anything requiring bending, laying down etc after food or drink. No

matter how hungry, I have to do physio first, otherwise I'd regurge &

then not be able to digest for hours.... Been like this as long as

can remember, just have adapted it into my way of doing things

without thinking, since childhood I guess.

Some do take meds, but as we're on so many, managing things without

is always a bit of a bonus!

good luck!

>Hi, thanks for the reply posts, i appreciate them. Kay, how do you know when

your reflux flares up? What signs should I be looking for in my son? I'll try

getting some natural medicines as you described for when he comes out. I think I

ned to rethink his diet too. Any guidleines/books you'd recommend? I just can't

give him all these pills at 11 yrs old, and have read about the long term harm

the anti reflux tablets do. Many thanks again, Janice

hi Janice

just really being conscientious about eating before doing ANY

activity that requires bending down/forward eg gardening; don't have

your lie down after eating/drinking; eat evening meal early, allow up

to 4 hours if have meat, heavy meals; be cautious any vigorous

activity straight after eating...

I know it sounds terribly tedious ... I realised in my teens that if

I did any of the above I felt awful, and nothing would digest for

hours, so I just automatically adopted to avoid unpleasantness, it

seems to have worked. A pain for eg get home hungry, also need to do

physio - esp if using " vest " - physio has to come first. Also I

developed habit of small meals frequently as needed rather than big

meals, and eat early evening.

Like Kay mentioned there are some foods/drinks that could trigger, eg

I can tolerate red wine well, but not white, or gassy drinks.... all

comes down to personal what works best...

hope this helps,

joy
