Guest guest
Hello Jona! My son HAD chronic sinusitis 2 years ago. He is 8 now and doing very well. An ENT is definitely the way to go. My son ended up having an IgG deficiency (immune system deficiency) We found out all of this after many months of doctors dealing w/ his symptoms w/ the wrong treatments. The best thing we have ever done for our little Sammy was get him into an well-trained experienced ENT. He sent us to an immunologist, we live in Orlando, FL and the nearest pediatric immunologist is in Tampa, FL @ USF Hosp. That's where we found out about the IgG def. After about a year, the immune spec and the ENT agreed on doing a new sinus surgery on Sammy. The procedure is called BALLOON SINUPLASTY This has been the best thing we ever did for Sammy!! He used to have 2-3 serious sinus infections each season. ER and hosp stays. 8 days on anti-biotics and the infection would break through the medicine! The surgeon goes in cleans out the passage-way from the nasal cavity into the sinus cavity. NO tissue removed, NO packing with cotton afterward. Recovery less than a day. Getting his tonsils out was 100 x worse!! Only reason the immunlolgist didn't want to do it was because the tool they use to 'clean out' the nasal cavity does sort of press down the cilia that fight off infectious germs passing thru. That was NO issue for Sam. And the cilia take maybe 2-3 days to start working again! I tell you, I had to home school Sammy the 1st semester of 2nd grade. In January, he came back to school, 2 months after the sinuplasty and 13 of the 18 kids in his class got strep throat NOT SAMMY!!! His doctors were thrilled!! Look up local ENTs and try to find one that does this procedure, the nice thing about it is that IF it doesn't work you can do the full-blown miserable sinus surgery. Mind you, we went to several drs before we decided on doing anything surgical, wish we had known about this procedure much sooner. Sam missed 42 days of school in his 2nd semester of 1st grade. Could have saved us alot of trouble. Best wishes and good luck w/ that snow/ ice storm -e Subject: Re: frequent sinus infectionsTo: bronchiectasis Date: Tuesday, February 1, 2011, 3:36 PM I have chronic sinus infections. Guest guest
Hi ,Thanks so much for your reply. What type of supplements do you use? I, too, use a Netti pot. I go to the ENT next week and will let you know what he says. It's good to have someone to bounce this off--most of my friends can't even say "bronchiectasis", let alone know about it!JonaTo: bronchiectasis Sent: Tue, February 1, 2011 9:49:30 PMSubject: Re: Re: frequent sinus infections Hi Jona, I have both bronchiectasis and chronic sinusitis. That didn't clear up the infection. At the time I had pseudomonas. It finally cleared up after a year and a half although I have been told it never is really gone. I loved the ENT because he always cultured out the infection and called me personally at home to tell me what was going on. He moved back to Iowa recently. Too bad. Good luck. Guest guest
Hi Kistine,Thanks so much for your reply--that's so good to know. I'm going to suggest that to the ENT. I was supposed to go today--but no one can get out of their garage. We really aren't prepared for snow and ice in Oklahoma! (My son lives in Gainesville, FL--I should be there).Best wishes to Sammy and you.JonaTo: bronchiectasis Sent: Tue, February 1, 2011 3:53:47 PMSubject: Re: Re: frequent sinus infections Hello Jona! Guest guest
Hi Jona, I wish I couldn't pronounce it. I use oregano oil, a throat spray that builds the immune system, Host Defense mushrooms, a lot of different kinds of vitamins, and when I get really sick colloidal silver which is not really good if you take it too much. It all has helped a lot in that I last went 6 months without an antibiotic after years of being on them steadily. Some of this group have been off antibiotics even longer. I also now have a vest which I think helps a lot. It shakes the mucous up in your chest and allows you to get it up. Sometimes I use a flutter valve when I start getting sick and I also use a neubulizer but not as much as I should. I also take symbicourt. The vest, symbicourt, and flutter valve are for the lungs of course. Good luck when you visit the ENT. When they did my sinus surgery they found a large cyst with staph infection in it, and snipped my turbinates. My mom also had the turbinates snipped. They said it was a congenital defect and that after the surgery I would have less infections. It didn't help me have less infections, but you never know until you try. A CAT scan can show a lot about the sinuses. Cindi W To: bronchiectasis Sent: Wed, February 2, 2011 5:39:59 PMSubject: Re: Re: frequent sinus infections Hi , Thanks so much for your reply. Guest guest
I usually had one doozy of a sinus infection a year, and always had sinus congestion and some color in the mucus. Always, that is, until I started using the inhaled 7% saline for my bronchiectasis plus lots of antibiotics for it as well. Now, no more sinus congestion/infection! The nebulizer gets both my lungs and my sinuses and is keeping my sinuses clear. It's wonderful! Suzanne R Brown
Guest guest
WOW! That's great that you got into an ENT so quickly! I should have toldyou that Sammy was diagnosed w/ Bronchiectasis @ Mayo Clinic, RochesterMn. He was diagnosed in Oct of 2009. We have, as you know, very mildweather here in central Florida, so I hope that's helping Sammy. Yes Iwonder if Gainesville would be better for you! There's a wonderfuluniversity hospital there. I hate living so far away from decent healthcare. That would be Mayo Clinic for Sammy.I hope you can dig out of your garage soon. I was raised in N. IL. and actually lived there until 6 years ago when we moved to FL. I missthe season changes, but my sisters in IL tell me that this was definitelya storm to miss, out on, anyway. Please let us know what the ENT says. BTW the procedure balloonsinuplasty is really just a take from the angio plasty cardiac surgeonsdo all the time. Our ins company paid for it, so I don't think it's evenconsidered experimental anymore... Stay warm and dry!! e Subject: Re: frequent sinus infectionsTo: bronchiectasis Date: Tuesday, February 1, 2011, 3:36 PM I have chronic sinus infections. Is this common with bronchiectasis? Guest guest
Hi Jona, I forgot to mention that I only started supplements when antibiotics no longer worked for the psuedomonas. I had several strains of it in my sinuses and lungs and some were immune to antibiotics. Even 6 weeks of IV's couldn't kick it. I think one of the members mentioned the saline in her nebulizer works for her and antibiotics. I wish the antibiotics did something for my infections, but it seems to only take the edge off and then I am back with the whole cycle. The information on how to clear our lungs was very good. This is a very helpful site. Cindi W. To: bronchiectasis Sent: Wed, February 2, 2011 5:39:59 PMSubject: Re: Re: frequent sinus infections Hi , Thanks so much for your reply. Guest guest
I have fought sinus infection for years. I had three surgery's done and that didn't help. I can not taste or smell since the last surgery. I also use the netti pot or the plastic bottle I bought from the place I get my rinse from. Nothing seems to help. I have been bouncing back and forth from one medicine to another. I am off medicine for a few days and it starts all over again. Right now I am dealing with Mycobacterium in my lungs. We are waiting on the sputum tests to see what grow out before treatment. I also think Bronchiectasis and Chronic Sinus go together. We just have to go one day at a time and never give up. I thank this group for all the information that each of us has to share. It always helps talking to others that are battling the same problems. Guest guest
hi Jona, It is generally considered part & parcel of bronch, along with arthritis & other inflammatory conditions. And because the sinuses drain downwards it naturally will spread to lungs -so, get a chest infx cleared, a sinus infx will re-infect lungs again. I had FESS (endoscopic sinus surgery) a couple of years ago and do a sinus saline flush every evening and now breathe much better but still do have coloured mucous from there, so I know it is Pseudomonas. I took a hint from someone on this site and sometimes add a few drops of vinegar to the flush (also bicarb) & sometimes that clears it. The flush mix I use is 2 parts salt to 1 part bicarb, I mix and store in glass jar; use about a half tspoon to 70-100 mls water. Add a few drops of vinegar if looking infected. I can send you an article to your private e-address, which clarifies a lot of these 'other' conditions which actually seem to be part of the package, if you wish, just let me know. cheers, joy

Guest guest
hi , have you been sent the article on " how to treat bronch " - describes many of the other problems we have so well, proposes that bronch should be called a syndrome rather than a singular disease as it always seems to come as a package. If you would like me to send to your own e-address let me know. Joy H
