Guest guest
Grace, these cough & cold things can hang on for weeks, and the extra mucus can cause vomiting and diahrrea. It sounds like she's drinking well and that's the most important thing. Push fluids, keep her hydrated. Watch how she's acting. If she's just laying there looking pitiful, that's much more worrisome than being up and about but cranky. If she seems to be acting fairly normal, I wouldn't be worried. If she is " acting really sick " then I'd take her. The first year of school usually does mean kids getting sick a lot. They're being exposed to germs they've never been exposed to before & they have to build up their immune systems. Do you have a family dr or a ped? Even if their office is closed they may have someone " on call " and the office message may give you the number. They'll be able to help you figure out what's going on. If you decide to take her in look for an urgent care center - I have found these are faster than the ER. Good luck!!!!! -Sara.
Guest guest
Thanks, Sara. That sounds like sound advice. She is, for the most part, behaving normally. I think she doesn't want to eat for various reasons, but especially because she started a coughing fit once while chewing her food, and some of it flew out of her mouth - and the rest, she couldn't down for another couple of minutes. Since then, she's not even eating her favorite food items. I will keep her hydrated for sure. But if she is feeling anything like me this morning - - this is awful. My neck and chest hurt so much I can hardly breathe. The throat is not sore but my neck itself hurts. It's to the point I don't want to talk in fear of coughing up a storm. I am so thankful for e-mail right now. Now I feel horrible for yelling at her yesterday morning for not eating food for a simple cough. (* Simple cough it may be, but still - I shudder at the thought of eating anything right now. We have a hospital pediatrician. I know she is not working during the weekends, but I can run to the ER in an instant if need be. But knowing how much my children HATE hospitals... I think Shaun will need to be home unless it's so urgent that I can't possibly wait. Hospital visits are truly horrible with these girls in tow. REALLY horrible. Thanks for the advice! Guest guest
Sorry she's so ill. Yuck. I would watch her carefully. If she's listless and not very active, maybe you should take her to ER. We have a great family clinic here where you can call and talk to a nurse about the symptoms and get advice on when to go to ER of a doctor. Is this somewhere like that where you live? Hope everything works out soon. Tuna ===== For those who are on the downside of advantage, and relying solely on courage— there is hope. Guest guest
It sounds like a case of " schoolitis " a cold or flu that previously sick-free kids get when they start school for the first time. It seems to be caused by contact with little creatures spewing their germs all over. when kids are preschool age they sometimes start to get sick a lot to build up their immune systems-antibodies, etc. Thea > I have nothing against hospitals, and if I felt that this was in the range of emergency, I would go right now. > > That said, I have no idea if I should be freaking out or if I should handle this calmly. > As I've touted on numerous occasions - my children do not get sick. Yes, as in not the Monday past, but the Monday before that. 12 days now, yes? > > Anyhow - her nose has gotten better somewhat, much less runny. I have to wipe it once every 4-5 hours, if that, which is a huge improvement from every minute <up to a couple of days ago>. Her cough just started this week and is still awful. I have the same cough. Major lung congestion - and you cough hard but it's not hard because everything is down in your lungs.... very stuffy. No fever. No rash. > But just an hour ago, I went in to check on them, and Sydney was sleeping a pool of vomit. We drew a bath, and upon opening up her diaper, we saw that she had diarrhea as well. Sydney NEVER has diarrhea. And she pooped earlier in the day, and that was good poop. Syd rarely poops twice in the same day. In a mad rush, Shaun and I gave her a bath, I cleaned up her whole bed, resheeted, recovered, etc - and dried her hair. She is now back in bed and seems to be sleeping soundly. Still - no fever. Cranky as can be, but I would be too if I was sleeping peacefully <in a pool of puke> and someone dropped me in a bathtub. > > Any ideas? > This " cold " or ailment is not going away. I don't have a clue anymore. Neither Sydney nor Madison have ever been sick with a cold for more than 3 days. There is also a little boy in their class, Christian, who has been " out sick " for at least a month now. I don't know what he's sick with, but if it's viral, I suppose it's possible that my girls have it too? > > I don't know... this doesn't feel urgent, but it doesn't feel right either. > Oh, did I mention that she is barely eating? She had one sandwich over 3 hours, most of her gummy bear reinforcements, and lots of juice and water. She had a cookie, and some chocolate too. I let her eat whatever she would eat, since she refused whatever I gave her. > > Am I too calm? Guest guest
Ahhh - that is a good idea. We have advice nurses at the hospital. Forgot all about that!!!! I talked to them several times a day during my girls' infancy. " She's crying and I already gave her milk and changed her!! HELP, is she sick???? " I hope they don't remember me LOL. The cough is about 5 days old... She woke up in better spirits today and had 3 pieces of a sourdough baguette. I thought that was a good choice for breakfast so I let her eat it. She enjoyed it, but I dont' think she will accept a real breakfast now. ( She doesn't want juice today. She wants water and only water.... Guest guest
Well I'm not a doctor, but I can tell you that this viral thing is going around everywhere!!! ...and it's persistent.... I'd keep a close eye on her and just for your peace of mind, get her in to see your pedi next week. JMO...of course, Penny
