Guest guest
I was sorry to hear that felt the need to leave the group. I could understand it, as I have found the way some folks have responded to posts hard to handle, myself. I really appreciated the responses of Jo and Dave and others to 's post - they certainly have helped me feel better about staying around. I hope may have the same reaction too. May I suggest that one way to diffuse some of the tension is to try and couch responses in terms of " this works for me " or " this has worked for me and others I've spoken with " rather than " this is the gospel truth about diabetes. " And to actually listen to others' experiences, even when they differ from your own. For example, Susie quoted someone as saying that their blood sugars soared after eating high fat, but they didn't always have problems with carbs (I don't have the exact quote handy). Well, I do have to cover carbs with insulin, and have apparently been eating fairly low carb according to Susie's definition for several years (with some digression initially upon discovering insulin <smile>) - but I've also seen my blood sugars soar after high fat. And I've heard from others who have had the same experience. Someone on the insulin resistance list mentioned studies that showed high fat diets could increase insulin resistance. (I asked for more information - if I find out more, I'll share it with the group.) Just because our experiences don't fit into a preconceived notion of how diabetic bodies respond doesn't mean that we aren't accurately reporting our experiences. It just means that life with diabetes is a little more complicated than I'd, at least, like it to be. And, a final note - while I appreciate the concern behind the attitude, I don't consider it the responsibility of anyone on this list to save my life (other than myself, of course). And as someone who grew up and had extremely bad experiences in a religion that emphasized proselytizing, it is personally offensive to be treated as someone who needs to be saved, even if it's from the ills of diabetes.
