Guest guest
: <<I assume from the way you have used it, that EI means something else in your area. Mind if I ask what she does, or what they are working on with her for EI? >> EI, or early intervention here in Oregon is a school. She is enrolled 5 days per week, 9 to 11:30 and during that time she has speech therapy a couple of days per week and the the usual classroom stuff. She was moved up this year to a kindergarden type class with 8 other students--all boys. They have a very cool classroom, and all the kids in the school--every single one has some challenge. They literally took over an abandoned older school and changed it to suit. There are units inside the classroom for all kinds of play, learning, etc for the kids. loves school. We have meetings to go over her progress and change her IEP as needed. I don't know what other people have, but this seems like a true effort to me. I'm just RELIEVED to hear that so many of the kids on this list AND their moms are coping as I have been. It makes me feel better. I had started to take on so much guilt because I'm not the perfect earth mom with no tv, who always serves perfect balanced meals, has their kids potty trained by 18 months, and all the kids wear baby gap or gymboree. Sheesh! I garage sale, go to auctions, sell stuff on ebay, and make quilts to stretch our dollars and cover the cost of 's destruction phases (gg). My kids wear gap or gymboree if I find it in a yard sale for .50, but not if I have to spend 28. bucks on one shirt at the mall! I don't really go to the mall, its just too much stimulation sometimes. Right now, I'm trying anything and everything I can think of to buy or find a West Highland Terrier for a family pet for and . is obsessed with them. She is very good with dogs, but the two we have have to stay outside--bloodhound and great pyrenees. I want to get an adult westie for her, but the prices! I just can't see 900. for a pup, and I don't really want a pup anyhow. Anyway, thanks again! Tina, I'm green with envy. Down here the closest thing to that is through private schools, and they cost money that we definitely don't have. They used to have an Easter Seals class, but they shut it down last year due to lack of funding. We won't even be officially talking to the elementary school people until April, and I am already really, really worried. I've heard alot of horror stories about the school system's ways of dealing with autistic kids, both generally and here in Ft. Myers. I'm doing my best to collect information starting right now, hoping that the better armed I am, the better it will go. > I'm just RELIEVED to hear that so many of the kids on this list AND their moms are coping as I have been. I don't really go to the mall, its just too much stimulation sometimes. I am fortunate to have all boys in that respect. While there are always some items that get worn out before they get to the next boy, most of the three youger boys clothes are hand-me-downs. As for A.G.'s clothes and the worn out ones, I know the inside of every dollar store, thrift shop, and flea market in the area like the back of my hand. >Right now, I'm trying anything and everything I can think of to buy or find a West Highland Terrier for a family pet for and . is obsessed with them. Guest guest
Early Intervention here is at my home... maybe it's becuase my daughter is only 2 1/2. She gets an hour of speech therapy on Mondays and Thursdays, an hour of occupational therapy on Tuesday and Wednesday and two hours with different teachers on Friday. Starting next week we will get a therapist (tss) with a bacholars degree four days a week from 9 until 12 for " behavioral therapy. " She/or he and I will work on 's safety issues, PICA behaviors, using utensils when eating and PECS. My husband and I will have " mobil " therapy (meaning they come to the house) one hour a week. I am praying very hard that he will start talking about everything. Will will also have a Behavioral Specialist four hours a week. I guess it's a good thing I won't be working after next week since I won't need the money if I can't leave the house LOL. G

The most important thing is to start when they are young I think. these people are stupid! I have the address of my local senator write here and tomorrow off from work. A Letter will be mailed to him tomorrow!!!!!! G
Guest guest
Okay, now I'm REALLY jealous. Nicky gets 1 hour of ABA per week, which we have to pay for out of pocket, and hopefully by March will be getting OT, which the Health Planning Council will pay for. He's supposed to be getting ST, but we can't afford to pay for it ourselves, and the HPC only farms it out to two places, and both of them have waiting lists a mile long; he's on the waiting list. He SHOULD be getting PT too (he was already evaluated for it), but the HPC will only cover just so many therapies at once, so until he's through with either OT or ST (yea, right), they won't recommend him for it. So the long and the short of it is that basicly we will get little to no help until he starts school next year. At that point I get to fight with the school system instead of the HPC. I just LOVE the thought of having to start all over again! Someone have an extra straight jacket handy? B > Early Intervention here is at my home... maybe it's becuase my daughter is > only 2 1/2. Guest guest
: This is sick. Why on earth can't they treat autism as fully as possible when the child is young so as to increase the likelihood of having a good outcome? Some of this stuff, like the ABA, you can do on your own? There are some pretty good books to use. Salli Nicky gets 1 hour of ABA per week, > which we have to pay for out of pocket, and hopefully by March will > be getting OT, which the Health Planning Council will pay for.
