Guest guest
Hi, everyone. First I want to say thank you, to the people who welcomed me back, so warmly! Thank you! Your messages warmed my heart. This past week, has been a busy one for me. I have been running the errands that didn't get done, while I was feeling so exhausted. Now, I feel as if I lost a week. But, I did accomplish a lot. During my exhausted period, I got my days and nights turned around. My " normal " sleep pattern now is, bed between 2:00a.m., and 5:00a.m., and up again early afternoon. I can't face the idea of preparing a dinner type meal at 9 or 10p.m. So, I have only been getting in two meals a day, with a snack of some sort, prior to bed. Often that is a full bag of microwave popcorn, and some cheese, and an apple or orange. I very much want to get my days and nights back to a more " normal " schedule. This week, I tried going to bed no later than midnight, and set my alarm for 8, or 9 a.m. For four straight nights, I wasn't able to fall asleep until 2 a.m., at the earliest. Yesterday, I got up with my alarm at 8:30a.m. By one in the afternoon, I was so sleepy I could not keep my eyes open, and I went back to bed. I slept through until 8:30a.m., without the alarm. I feel more rested, today, than I have for over a week. But, doing that meant only one meal yesterday, and only one dose of glucophage. I still want to return to a bed by 11:00p.m., and arise by 8 or 9a.m. schedule. Do any of you have any ideas about this? Has anyone else had this problem? Thank you, in advance. Our bodies have " internal clocks, " and if we get into a pattern of staying up most of the night, that is what we will adjust to. If you just keep trying to fall asleep at normal times and get up with the sun, your body will reset its internal clock to make that happen. Use a room-darkening shade, use a " white noise " machine if you are bothered by noises, and make your sleeping quarters as comfortable as possible. And I will mention once again that I discovered I have a horrible problem with caffeine. If you use any caffeine products, I would recommend discontinuing them immediately, to see if that helps you. I hope you are able to improve your situation. As a fellow insomniac, I truly sympathize ... Susie
Guest guest
Susie, dear. Thanks for this message! I do drink two, diet Dr. Pepper's with dinner, and sometimes, another one with my popcorn snack. So, I will go back to sun tea in the evenings, made with herbal tea. See how that goes. I appreciate you taking the time to make these suggestions. I will continue to work toward getting back on a more " normal " sleep schedule. I do have a dark blind in my bedroom. I also, sleep with both an eye mask, and ear plugs, as there are noisy dogs all around me! {:-D I see you are having an echocardiagram tomorrow. You jare on my daily prayer list. I do hope that will lead to resolving your heart problems. Hugs, Sheila __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Try getting outdoors for at least 30 minutes in the early afternoon. That can help reset your body clock so that you sleep when it's dark and wake in the daylight. So does Melatonin (over-the-counter). And I have a prescription for Atarax (hydroxyzine). I mix them up because the effect tends to wear off after a few weeks. Primarily, what has improved my sleep is breaking my caffeine habit. Susie

I buy the generic stuff from my local super-drugstore/general store called Fred Meyer's - I'm sure they have it at Walgreen's etc. Just look for it under " allergy meds " . What you're looking for is diphenhydramine. I take two 25 mg. capsules a half hour before I want to fall asleep and it works like a charm. Guest guest
Hi, everyone. I want to thank those of you who answered my email about sleep problems. Some great suggestions were offered. I have both actifed and sudafed on hand, and when I read the boxes, it said that if someone is taking antidepressants, taking actifed or sudafed, can cause problems. I am taking Prozac, so that let's me out. I also take Feldene for arthritis, and have been told that I am not to take aspirin, tylenol, exceedrin, etc. It can cause abdominal bleeding! I am going to try the suggestion about getting up 15, or 20 minutes earlier, each day. I think this is a great suggeston, to take it slowly, and give my body a chance to adjust gradually. I will also try getting half an hour, or more, of sunshine each day. The past two days, my bg readings have been consistently below 130. Last night I read until 2:30a.m. The new Amy Tan book, which is hard to put down. {:-D I got up at 11:00a.m. My bg was Lo. I will check again at 3:30p.m., and have " lunch " . Last night I had my dinner at 8:00p.m., and that seemed to work, OK. In my case, I am a widow, living alone, and retired. So, I don't have any real reason to get up early, and go to bed early. For some crazy reason, I feel guilty tho, having such different hours from the rest of the world. Judith, you have helped me by saying that these hours are your preference. I thought it was just me! {:-D Sheila __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi, Vicki. Where can I buy the straight stuff? How do you take it? Hugs, Sheila The magic ingredient that helps with sleep in the Tylenol PM is the diphenhydramine. No reason to take the Tylenol unless you have a headache or other aches...you can buy the straight stuff (diphenhydramine, I mean). Guest guest
Thank you, . What excellent information! I take Metformin 3X500, don't get sleepy in the afternoon unless I tried staying up later the night before (and still waking at 3am), but I get sleepy after dinner. My numbers are consistently in the 75-95 range, I'm taking 1.5X10mg of Glipizide. (the 1/2 at dinner). I just might be producing too much insulin! I'm now just 30 lbs. from goal weight after losing about 34, so I'm not TOO overweight! (Actually down a total of 104, but un-dxed diabetes did most of the work for me.) Very lowcarb diet, too. Gotta exercise more... finally got the $10 yard sale exercycle working! This sleep pattern has been going on for several years. I just might be too established in it to change easily. Dang! I'll try the 15-20 change at a time, even tho' I can't predict exactly when I'll fall asleep. Vicki, I'm not supposed to drink the hi-test coffee due to circulation problems. Ah, ambrosia of the gods! I miss it! in hot So. Calif. (93 yesterday in Pasadena!)

I figure I'll " undersweeten " them because I don't really like sugar, and if they're still not interesting enough, I'll add Club Soda to give them some fizz. << in hot So. Calif. Decogestants are for drying up congestions, and they can also speed you up speed, raise your bp and will definitely raise your bg's. Please everyone, read your labels. It's the antihistamines that will help you sleep, and be careful not to buy the kind that have decongestants in them as well (some cold and sinus meds). Also, as long as you're taking insulin it really doesn't make sense to take pills too. My own regime is to take Ultralente (long acting, no peak) for basal coverage twice a day approximately 12 hours apart and H for meal coverage, amount depending on how many carbs at dinner. Used to be on pills but stopped all of them after I started on insulin. Vicki, adult onset type 1 for 3 years.

Guest guest
Hi! I'm Dawn, new to this group, and I find myself with the same problems - can't stay awake after 8pm, wake up about 3am. My husband gets up at 4:30 am for work and I get up with him, so I thought I was tired early because I got up so early. I am taking 2000 mg glucophage, 30 mg actos, and 2 shots of insulin a day - 25 units NPH at bedtime, 10 units before breakfast. My HbA1c is 6.7, my am fasting is usually 145, bedtime is about 175. I have a hard time exercising because my numbers drop so fast after about 15 minutes. I'm still trying to figure out what to do, still working on weight loss without much success - gained in fact. Pretty discouraging! Thanks for listening! Dawn > , > > Do you have a feel for your insulin levels? I think it has to do with what ato has been addressing ... insulin RESISTANCE. All of the numbers you post send a message to me that you are eating too many carbohydrates, considering the state of your pancreas beta cells. Dr. Bernstein estimates that, by the time we are diagnosed, most of us have lost 80 percent of them. I don't know what your food intake is, but I'd be willing to bet you could knock back at least some of your meds, sleep better (the elevated insulin/adrenalin combo waking you up at odd hours) by the simple act of lowering your carbohydrate intake. High insulin levels (to deal with the carbohydrates) prevent us from losing weight. Susie
