Jeff - I can't speak for everyone; just from my own experience. I have been

a volunteer fire officer concurrently with being director of emergency

communications, which was a full time career position. This has happened

twice in my life, in two different states. The majority of the time there

were no conflicts. If I was a little late for work because I was at a fire,

I'd make the time up. In fact, one employer was fairly liberal in letting me

leave work if there were a major blaze, but I never " abused " the privilege

by running out to every minor call. However, on the very rare occasion when

the incident in which I was involved had an impact on the 9-1-1 center, I

reported for duty, as needed, to the communications facility. My rationale

was that I could probably have a bigger impact there, anyway.

Well, as far as being a volunteer for one and paid

employee of another, unless the one that pays has

enough people to cover the absence, the person's first

loyalty should be to the one that pays him/her. On

the volunteer for both side, I agree with you,

Jeff--they should pick one or the other as the only one.
