Thanks Lianne. I appreciate it. I've done quite a bit of research on

it over the last couple of days and several people have given me

info and their experiences with it.

I went to check out the site you indicated.....and it kept popping

up a window wanting me to " Please click here to download software to

your computer " . It even bypassed my popup blockers!!!!!

Thanks for the input. :-)

> Does anyone know anything about the medication called Cymbalta?

I've been taking Cymbalta for six months now. It was prescribed to me

as a pain control measure only for the fibromyalgia (I don't have

depression). So far it seems to work well with minimal side effects.

I didn't notice results for about the first four days and then it

started working. For me at least, it doesn't completely eliminate

pain but it makes the pain much more managable. I went from being

completely incapacitated to being able to do most of my daily routines

with small breaks. It WILL kill the appetite and I had nausea for

about a month after starting the medication.

It's not just an SSRI as I understand it. It also functions as

something else. They're not sure why it works for fibro patients.

They do know it only works for 50% of those prescribed it for pain

and that they're all women.

Thank you very much, I will go take a look at it. My mom has been on both Cylexa and Effexor, both of which did not help. I'm hoping the Cymbalta does.

I have been on Cymbalta for @ 6 weeks. I was very sick for 2-3 weeks

but am feeling much better now. It is not only a selective serotonin

reuptake inhibitor, but also a dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake

inhibitor. It is used for both depression and diabetic neuropathy,

but has also been found to help FMS pain. I can say it is not only

helping my pain and paresthesias, but I have increased energy. It

looks like it is a keeper for me. Other SSRIs I have tried did

nothing to help my FMS.

A good site to read more on Cymbalta is www.rxlist.com.

I am on Cymbalta now, and it has done me a huge WORLD of good over

what I was taking, which was prozac, and I hated prozac. But

Cymbalta, I almost feel like a person again !! It's good stuff!

Chuck

Does anyone know anything about the

medication called Cymbalta? It is supposed to treat both depression

and pain. I do not know if it is an SSRI med or not. I do know it's

new. I want to know because that's what they have put my mom on.

Thanks.

I like http://www.crazymeds.org/ as a source of information regarding

the different types of drugs. It's primarily aimed at folks with

mental and cognitive disorders who take the associated medications,

but since there's considerable overlap between those and fibro meds,

the site is still useful.

Cymbalta is relatively new. It was approved for use as an

anti-depressant and for diabetic neuropathy in September of 2004. The

clinical trials, from what little information I have been able to pull

up, were relatively small (2000 patients in the one which got it

approved). Little research in the US is being done into its affects

on fibromyalgia. I think there are two studies out there which showed

that it will work for 50% of the women it is prescribed to in order to

control pain. It doesn't seem to work for men at all and they dont'

know why.

It's what is called a multiple reuptake inhibitor. You can look at

the official site here:

http://www.cymbalta.com/

Its prescription for fibromyalgia is what they call an off-label use:

the drug is not specifically approved for it but some physicians have

found that it may work for certain other conditions. One study I read

said that at this time the FDA has no plans to research or approve its

use for fibomyalgia. Sweden and Norway are currently conducting study

trials but the results will not be known for at least three years.

They don't really know a whole lot about side effects or long term

effectiveness.

I started taking Cymbalta six months ago at the minimum recommended

dosage. I didn't notice any improvement at all for about four days.

On the fourth day, my morning stiffness was gone and the excruciating

pain in my chest and back had been reduced to a dull throb. One week

later, I was walking around without my cane most days. Nowadays I

rarely need my cane unless I overdo it.

It isn't a miracle cure. I still hurt. However, the pain is bearable

compared to levels before I started taking it. Weather fronts,

inattention to diet, or inadequate sleep will still cause pain and

fatigue. To be honest, my dosage probably needs upped. However ---

and this is the important part --- it's _bearable_. I wasn't able to

do anything before being prescribed this drug. I slept most of the

day cradled in a recliner lined with an egg crate mat because I hurt

so bad. I'd been on just about every pain medication or

anti-inflammatory you could name with either no affect or having

developed a tolerance to it.

I'm a little worried about long term usage. My doctor isn't good

about doing regular liver panels and other bloodwork. Since we're in

a very restrictive HMO, I don't have the opportunity to change

physicians until renweal in October.

And the first month or so on this medication is pure, unmitigated

hell. My appetite dwindled to nothing and the mere thought of putting

anything anywhere near my mouth made me nauseated. That goes away

after about six weeks. I consider it well worth it.

I can climb stairs now. Most days I can live my life, if I budget my

time and energy.

I take other medications --- an anticonvulsant for seizures, an

anti-anxiety medication, several thyroid hormones, and a diabetic

medication intended to treat an unrelated metabolic disorder. I

haven't noticed any adverse reactions between them, although I was

disappointed that it didn't eliminate the need for the anti-anxiety

medication.

I might, however, be an exceptional case. I don't seem to suffer from

the clinical depression others describe so the Cymbalta was prescribed

to me for pain management only. I did notice that it completely

oblitherates the fibro fog. I hadn't realized how poorly I'd been

thinking for so long until it lifted.

I am taking Cymbalta for depression. It doesn't help me, for pain,

but Hydrocodone does.
