Guest guest
Leah, Look at your thumbs... the nails... see that crescent shape at the cuticle? That is what they call a half moon.... now look at the nails on your other fingers.... do you have those same whitish crescent shapes? When I went in hyper.. I had mine.. after my RAI we watched them disappear, my doc checked them every time I came in as part of my exam as we waited for me to bottom out to determine if any percentage of my thyroid survived the RAI.... for nearly thirteen years I've waited for them to come back.. they haven't yet.... Don't remember if they are supposed to or not.. one of those mysteries like my hair, will it go blonde again or stay light brown? Guest guest
, I think it is normal to only have half moons on your thumbs. I also don't have half moons on my fingers - I do on my thumbs, though. Guest guest
Hi Topper, I checked out my friend's finger nails and she has the moons. Darn it! I had myself convinced I was doing better. I think I'm still hypo. I'm going to try doing 1 3/4 grains each day and see if I feel better with more. I'm good at convincing myself I'm doing okay, and then I'm not. Guest guest
Zina, The moons not returning may not mean anything.. I've not yet heard if they will come back... it could be that once we lose them they won't come back... I wish I could remember what the doc said about them.. I just remember it was a sure sign and a good doc will look at the fingernails as a confirmation before ordering labs.. the orthopedist that dx'd me checked my nails... I do remember about colds... that we don't catch colds if we are severely hypo.. body temp is too low.. that's why I know I'm doing better.. that cold virus that I've been fighting the last 6 weeks proved that out.... Guest guest
So if my nails are like onion skin paper and have ridges that make the surface of the nail uneven and run longways from the moon toward the tip of the nail, and I also have no moons on any finger except my thumb........that means what?
Guest guest
Nail ridges, flakes and lack of moons are all indicators of hypo... usually over a long period of time.. either untreated or undertreated. ....although we still haven't found out if the moons come back after getting closer toward optimal meds.. My single ridge has not come back, the last time I filed it was on Valentine's day... so I'm guessing that it's possible that ridges go away in time.... Guest guest
Zina, while the idea that you could be low on aldosterone is " possible " , its not probable. Aldosterone is the mineral-corticoid secreted by the adrenal cortex (same place as cortisol, DHEA and the androgens) that regulates blood pressure and the potassium/sodium balance in your body. Lack of this will giive you hypotension for sure, and while it can be postural, it would most likely also be at reast, but it will also cause a great deal of dehydration and postassium overload with lack of salt. You'd be puking for sure. In other words, aldosterone insufficiency is life threatening, and you would probably be in the hospital on a saline IV and the docs would be sitting around scratching their head wondering what was wrong with you. That, rather than cortisol, is what causes addions crisis. (this is why people with pituitary insuffiency causing secondary addisons do not have real addisonian crisises, because aldosteron is not pit regulated but cortisol is) Having low cortisol sucks, but having low aldosterone is what can kill you. Cortisol can still cause the postural hypotension feeling even though the pressure doesn't drop as badly. Other things that can cause that are low blood sugar (did you eat besides trail mix? what? and how much?? are you still avoiding sugar??) and dysautonomias, and what's that thing, Oh yeah, hypothyroidism...(once I got on armour for a while, my postural lightheadedness was gone) among other things, including sweating too much as you lose your minerals and cause a sodium/potassium imbalance...so while you should talk to your doc about it, chances are, its not aldosterone related. > > Yah, I'm thinking adrenals too. Guest guest
I have moons on some fingers and not others...how weird.... Is this an indicator or is it another old wives tail?? > Oh no! Guest guest
According to the two really good docs that I worked with it's a valid indicator. Over the years it's something that I've consciously looked at... and sure enough folks that I know that are on thyroid hormone are missing half moons and 'normal' people have them.... Guest guest
It is the bottom the adrenal stuff, and my 24 hour urinary adrenal steroids evaluation showed it. Mine was 2. out of range 6.-44. You need to put it in google search , but it regulates the blood pressure, salt wasting, kidneys and water output.
