Hi Joy

My understanding is that CPOD - chronic bronchitis & emphysema - is caused by environmental factors such as cigarette smoke, dust, pollutants etc. Bronch is infection based. Miners can get chronic bronchitis & the mining industry has a lot of 'say' in Australia in political circles, unions etc. Maybe that has something to do with it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Keep well everyone. Theresa

hi Theresa, after many discussions with CAPERS (pulm rehab here), Lungnet etc... yes, you're dead right. Crazy, how can bronchitis be COPD & not bronch for one thing, the other being why fund COPD to exclusion (almost) of non-copd??Maybe we all could (in Aus) start pestering Lungnet and the govt to get their act together - or use anti-discrimination agencies...a possibility?cheers, joy

hi Theresa,

the mining angle is a new one....very interesting, and makes sense.

Where did you come across this? I'd be interested to pursue it

further. So far, anywhere so far has drawn brick walls with barbed

wire on top.

I was born & bred in Melbourne. My partner told me that chronic bronchitis was often caused by mining & smog. There would be other reasons too. He was a dr working in Newcastle (UK) & other places. Smoking is a cause of a lot of COPD but not all. My understanding has always been that COPD was Emphysema & Chronic Bronchitis. Because we don't have either COPD or CF we are sort of in limbo as far as funding goes.

About 20 years ago my then specialist told me that people with bronch could benefit from the advances in asthma treatment. Now the disease seems to be treated under the umbrella of CF. That's the situation where I am treated anyway.

Keep well everyone. Theresa

Theresa, I lived in the Latrobe Valley from the age of 6 until 16 when we moved

to Reservoir, and later Glenroy. Dad worked for the SEC at Yallourn which does

not exist anymore, a shame as it was the prettiest town in the LV. Talk about

pollution we had 5 power stations that burnt anthracite coal 24/7, the air used

to turn yellow in the afternoons but it never hurt us any. The only prior lung

problems I had was contracting TB when I was 10 and spending 9 months at the

Austin Hospital in 1957.

I know some people who grew up in the Latrobe Valley.

Do you know what caused your bronch?

Keep well everyone. Theresa

I really am not sure what caused my Bronch Theresa, however it all started with

a flu shot in the fall of 2008 the day after the shot I went hoarse which

lasted for 3 or 4 months then we went to the Meditteranean for 3 weeks and I

caught a nasty cold or so I thought, my Dr had me see an Asthma Dr who had me

see a pulmonologist who was absolutely incompetent as he kept telling me for 9

months that I was wheezing so I must have Asthma and he prescribed many

different inhalers none of which did any good, finally I told him that I wanted

a second opinion which I had at University of Washington and U.W told me that I

definately did not have Asthma and that the CT scan showed Bronch. I think that

it was caused by chronic coughing sometimes for as long as 40 seconds many, many

times a day for many months, this type of coughing has to damage your lungs I

would think.

My coughing spells can last for a couple of hours at a time and then resume for another hour or more as they did last night. After 2 weeks of meds and coughing, I was finally able to bring up some of those nasty mucus plugs which I brought into the lab today for a culture.

With these long gut wrenching coughing attacks, I was concerned that it was effecting my heart, but the Dr. said it doesn't. In my case, it's the only way I can bring up the plugs.EILEEN

Thankfully my coughing is now only a few seconds in duration due to the high

prednisone dosage which I have been on for the past 6 weeks (and 6 more weeks to

go) to get rid of my BOOP which is now called COP Cryogenic Organizing

Pneumonia. I am going to have a chest x-ray in a couple of hours and see the

pulmonologist right afterwards, I am hoping for an improvement in the COP.

Wishing you the best and relief from those horrible coughing spells.

Tony.
