It was interesting. I am posting and excerpt here from the Dr. concerning Laproscopic vs Open RNY DR. JOSEPH CAPELLA at 3:03pm ET We currently advocate the traditional, open technique for gastric bypass. The procedure has fewer complications than the laparoscopic techique. The procedure lasts about one third the time. But most importantly, there is no long term data for the laparoscopic gastric bypass technique, especially with the super obese that can be compared to the open technique.Issues of scars really should be secondary to concerns of safety and long-term weight loss. in Pa. Here's the link: http://www.abcnews.go.com/chat/ gastricbypass_intro.html Take care... in FL

The Live Chat on abcnews.com already ended at 4pm EST, it's now 4:30pm EST. You can still click on the link though, I believe, to read what was discussed. One guy actually wrote, & this burned me up, the following: at 3:41pm ET Dr. Capella, Do you ever worry that the bypass surgery gives otherwise lazy overweight people an " easy " way out at the expense of health care insurance? I thought either he's someone who's always been thin & has a predjudice against heavy people OR he works for an insurance company! What makes him think ALL overweight poeple are " lazy " anyway??? Guest guest
What was the doctor's response? I tried to go check it out but I couldn't find it. I would have loved to answer that question for the guy. I admit I just love tearing in to people like that. in WA -- Re: ABC News.com Live Chat NOW Sorry, the original message below took longer to post on here than I thought it would. Guest guest
Hi, . The link to the chat earlier on abcnews.com is: http://www.abcnews.go.com/chat/gastricbypass_intro.html I just went on there & it's all still there. First is the article about the woman who had the surgery, then at the bottom is the chat from earlier today. I tried to post a reponse myself to that guy during the chat but it never made it through. Oh well, I guess those people will always we out there, unfortunately... in FL ;-) > > For anyone interested, there's a live chat going on right now on > > abcnews.com. Guest guest
I know, I was actually surprised that the Moderator let that guy's message go through, knowing that thousands of overweight people looking into gastric bypass would be participating in the chat, ya know? That was pretty rude, to say the least. I also found out that Dr. ph Capella is the Plastic Surgeon, it's his father, Dr. Capella, that preforms the Gastric Bypass. I guess they have their practice together, makes sense... In FL ;-) > > For anyone interested, there's a live chat going on right now on > > abcnews.com. Guest guest
Yeah, that would make sense. And he may not understand how hurtful a comment that may be. He very well may have thought that his answer would suffice, not his fault really. However, it would have been nice if some of us or anyone on " our side of the fence " would have had the opportunity to comment. -------------------- Tammy B Open RNY - 4/30/02 BMI 49 - Dr. Weber Re: ABC News.com Live Chat NOW I know, I was actually surprised that the Moderator let that guy's message go through, knowing that thousands of overweight people looking into gastric bypass would be participating in the chat, ya know?
