Susie,

Wow! Thanks for all the practical and helpful tips. We really appreciate it.

Yes, we are very thankful for the team doctor here and that he seems to know

what he is doing. We are also very thankful that Leo is covered by the social

insurance here so everything has been free so far (the team has paid for all the

machines, shots, needles, test strips, tests, etc.) Plus Leo speaks Portuguese

and I understand quite a bit, so that is very helpful as well.

A couple questions. You mentioned glucose tablets. We bought little packs of

sugar and put them everywhere...is that ok? What is an HbA1c?

I have good news to report as yesterday Leo's levels were down to pretty much

normal levels (we think they are normal). He was 98mg before dinner, 93 mg two

hours after dinner and 68mg at 3:30 am. Those numbers are much improved from

his way over 500mg when he started. I am learning to choose good foods and to

balance it, but I have a long way to go. Some of the foods here have

nutritional labels, but not all of them. They do have the contents written on

the package so that is a good thing. How about black beans with a little rice?

I know that beans are a good source of protein, but do they have too many carbs?

I really need to get some cookbooks and the books you have all mentioned.

Thanks for the tip about the soup. We will try new soups this week. The nurse

wants us to cut out some bread and eat the soup for lunch with some

protein...how does that sound? They want his level to be in the 200's before

practice.

Speaking of practice. Leo played the whole time yesterday and did great. He

was 133mg when he started so the dr. had him eat part of a candy bar (boy was

that a treat for him). And then halfway through practice he came out and

measured and it was 106mg so he ate part of an apple. You are right about

basketball being very draining...11miles in a game...I always knew we ran a lot

when we played, but I had never heard a measured amount. :) I am going to all

of his practices for awhile so I can be there to help him test it and to just

watch for any signs (and to also be a support). So, he has a big game tonight

at 9pm...which is his dinner time so we are trading a few of his snack times

around. We are praying that all will go well, any tips?

Have a great day and thanks so much!

~Kim

I didn't get the original post on this one...my mailbox must've been too

full. Could someone forward it to me privately? Thanks, Vicki

Hi, Barb, thanks anyway, can't get into archives but Susie re-sent original

post (or someone did), so I've seen it.

On another topic, I tried one of those Pure De-Lite dark chocolate bars

n is always raving about and -- yes -- they are GREAT! Tastes like t he

Real Thing...and only one carb for the whole bar! (As opposed to something

like 2-1/2 carbs for two squares of the Carbolate chocolate bar). I'd buy a

case at a time but I'm afraid I'll want to gobble 'em all at once! Vicki

We really want you to find some actual glucose tablets. Sugar is " food " and

has to be processed in Leo's digestive system; glucose takes a shortcut and

goes right to work bringing his numbers up. You should find them at a

pharmacy. HbA1c stands for hemoglobin A1c, and it is a measure of how Leo's

glucose readings have been running during the previous month or so. He

should probably get one every three months.

That's great! :o)

I go for meat-based soups, for the protein, and to keep the carb count down.

Beans are not too bad, because the fiber helps offset the carbs. But rice is

a big spiker for many of us.

Gosh, he is doing so much better! I consider professional basketball players

the best athletes in the world. I hope it went well last night. I was away

from home and couldn't get to my e-mail.

I sent them to her, Barb. Thanks for offering. How is everyone doing today?

We had a deliciously snowy winter - just what this arid climate needed to

replenish our aquifer and help out the wildlife and other living things. But

in the past week winter has lost its hold. At 7000 feet elevation, the sun

can feel quite warm even during the winter. The birds are at the feeder, the

dogs are snoozing in the yard, and all is well here ...

Susie, I just thought I would let you know that Leo did just fine during his

game. We thought it was funny that he was the only one from either team to play

the whole game, including the overtime. His levels were a bit high, but we

figured that was because of the adrenaline and stuff. So we are learning slowly

but surely. He started a new insulin on Thursday and it is called " Mixtard "

(but I think the European names are different)...it is a 70/30 mix. It has been

working well so far and we just need to figure out the right dosage. Thanks for

all the info we are learning in this group.
