That is insane. How could they not realize that you were applying for a

dispatcher position? I'm sorry to hear that you are not going...unless you

send them a little reminder that you applied for DISPATCHER and not POLICE

OFFICER position and get them to change their mind. The more of " us " from

the list there the merrier...!!!

Hello from one of the last Olympic's dispatchers!!!

Yes I chose to volunteer at Sydney 2000 summer Olympics for my employers,

New South Wales Police Service. Let me define the term volunteer. We were

paid our normal salaries for the period, but to serve at the event, you were

requested to volunteer. It was without a doubt an event that one will

remember for a lifetime and as they were short in numbers from Sydney

itself, volunteers from country areas were sought and only from our home

state of New South Wales. Depending on where you were placed, governed your

work load. We had dispatchers at all sites, assisting police in the

security of the games. Unlike the U.S., each emergency service have their

own dispatchers, so other agencies were involved as well, including Armed

Forces. I myself, worked in the main security section for Homebush Bay,

right next to the main operating control room for the Homebush Olympic site

and had a birds eye view, via a bank of T.V.'s of how the games were

controlled from a security standpoint but also all other agencies and

functions were in the same complex. And yet you could step outside and be

right in the middle of everything. We had unlimited security passes to all

areas but unfortunately that didn't get you into any of the arenas unless

your duty specifically entailed entry there. However there were

opportunities to gain access.

The pro's and con's, the pros, being at the centre of the world for 14

days, working in a totally different environment with many others from all

sorts of emergency services and Armed Forces. Free travel around Sydney for

14 days. Rubbing shoulders with all sorts of VIP's including a face to face

and chat with . Holding the torch that was used to light the

Olympic cauldron. Seeing the absolute marvel of moving 100'000's of

thousands of people around with hardly any dramas at all. Being able to

celebrate with the Australian Women's Hockey Team after their Gold Medal,

( I do have a long contact with Hockey in administration) the memories are

enormous. The cons, having a huge amount of private security guards using

Police portables and on our channels with no idea what so ever about any

sort of radio procedure. ( yes they had to use a large amount of guards to

supplement the Police numbers) any fellow dispatchers who may be on this

list, will fondly remember " water radio, water, I need water " hehehhe Not

really being recognised by the Department for making the effort to come in

from the country to assist when they were short of numbers. The food they

supplied was terrible.

Anyway to anyone who is going to your winter Olympics, it will be truly an

unforgettable experience, a life time experience that should not be passed

up.

I am the only one from the sunny south going? I am running around trying to

find warm clothes LOL... Have you ever tried shopping for thermal undies in

Florida when it is 82 degrees out? They all think I am NUTS!!!!!!!

Thank goodness I am going to visit my sister in Gettysburg for Christmas, I

can shop there.

Dora...and the rest of you in the warmer regions who may be going to SLC,

Try these web sites for the warm clothing that you'll need in Utah.

www.llbean.com

www.landsend.com

www.vermontcountrystore.com

The first 2 you'll find plenty of choices for sweaters, turtlenecks, wool

socks, warm boots, etc. I highly recommend the silk long underwear that they

sell at the Vermont Country Store. They're very warm but not bulky so you

can wear them under just about anything. I think they even make liners to

wear under socks out of the same silk.

Good luck!!

I drove to SLC from California in August for the APCO show and I didn't have

any problems getting around town. Now, I couldn't find an address to save my

LIFE (all these East 389 South and whatnot) but I didn't find the traffic all

that bad. I'll be driving in from CA, too, for the Olymp's. Braving the

snow, etc etc...

About the same thing here Randy. Still trying to decide: drive, but what to

do with my car for a month when I get there...fly, prices down (abt $420

round trip from MLW Moline, IL) or AmTrak ($255 round trip from Mt.

Pleasant IA but I can't get the train home till 2-27....what to do for 2 days?

Randy,

If i remember right you are coming from Ohio. I'll tell you a great way

to get there. I-70 to I-74 in Indianapolis then I-74 to I-80 in Moline then

that'll take you straight across. I've driven it 4 times when we lived in

CA. I now live in IL so if you decide to take that way you could stop by

and see me in Rantoul, just off I-74, north of Champaign. I'd be glad to

show you our dispatch! Just let me know.
