Guest guest
I know I am not as " seasoned " as others, I am only 30, but I do have a pet peeve along these lines. I have one of those uncanny abilities to remeber music ie who dunnit, relaesed it , and all that stuff. The current trend in Pop music to do remakes is driving me nuts. The younger dispatchers bring in CD's and say hey you have to hear this new song. They then get mad at me for quoting the lyrics after the first few lines. Just goes to show you, most of the good stuff the younger generations look for we have already enjoyed!

The topic of " Captain Kangaroo " came up, and the " newbie " BARELY remembered him. Guest guest
As one of those " experienced " members of this list, I encounter this syndrome on a regular basis. There's nothing like musing " Hmm, I liked that song the FIRST time it came out " and having youngsters in the Comm Center either reply " First time? " in a totally confused manner, or blurt out, " How old ARE you?? " I prefer the first response. One of my dispatchers is only a year younger than I am, and she and I often look at each other and roll our eyes at youth's inexperience in such important things as Good Music and Classic TV shows. My partner Comm Sup is ... well.. " at least as experienced " as am I, (if not a tad bit more) and when all three of us are present, we can totally confuse the 4th person in the room who has NO clue as to what we're talking about. <grin> One dispatcher about 5 years younger than me is a rabid player of a particular little game in the Comm Center. We usually have a radio station playing in the background. Normally it's on a " soft rock " station (until the midnight shift gets in, and they choose a much more ummm.... raucous... selection of music) and this dispatcher worked day watch for the past several years. She almost always " won " the guess more quiclkly than anyone else as to which artist or group is performing. I'm not good at that game, but it's fun to watch them play it. The only way most folks can beat her is to wait until she's transmitting to a unit, then blurt out " Phil ! " (or whatever) and she'll finish her transmission, turn around and bitch that they're cheating, but do they know WHICH album that song was from??? She's recently moved to the afternoon shift. (Because, as I've previously mentioned, we reduced the number of available shifts and she wanted certain days off no longer available to her on the day shift, so she took days off she liked better on the afternoon shift.) Now she has SOME new competitors, but.... with all the overtime and people working parts of other shifts in addition to their regular hours, most of the same few players are still trying to beat her. The radio program selection changes after 5 pm, though, so she doesn't have quite the edge she did on the day watch. And it's busier, so ..... her partners at the call-taker consoles take advantage of hearing the music before she does, since she's busier at the radio now. The other day she turned to me and said, " - when can we have our shifts back? I want " my " days off on days again! I just can't win with all these cheaters in here! " And there's one song she cannot stand, by Enya. (Yes, something NEW!) Most of us like that song - if you're a Third Watch aficionado, it was featured in the last season ending episode. She doesn't like it because she doesn't understand the words, and she's 'decided' it's cursed. <giggling> Everyone ALWAYS alerts her to when it starts: " Hey, it's the " nightmare " song, Barb! " " Oh sure, " she'll snap, " Now we'll have a fatality! " It just so happens that I listen to the same radio station in my car, and I've left the Comm Center, heard it on my drive home, and called to ask for her, specifically, just to say, " Your song is on! " The odd thing about her perceived " curse? " We often do have a fatality later in the shift. Now, nobody's ever pointed out that just about any other song is also on the play list on any day we have a fatality.... and when we don't, she's changed what " it " will do: a fatality OR a pursuit. Well, jeeeeez. Can't miss with those criteria! Anyway, I've gone astray from the topic. But the " youngsters " cannot win at this particular game because there aren't many " classic " songs they know as well as we " experienced " folks - and <grin> seniority rules in the radio station selection, too. Guest guest
OK, so I was here as the earth cooled and watched the dinosaurs graze. I still have a rotary dial telephone, leased from AT & T. (If you want to have fun ask a 9 year old to use it) I still have a record player, records and play them. 45's, 33's and 78's. (much to my children's embarrassment) I until last year the wire to our telephone ran from the pole straight into the phone, no connection box or anything. (I did tap it for an extension a few years back after making sure Illinois Bell had no problem with that.) My telephone was made by Western Electric. My Atari 2600 still works and has some really neat games. After looking at this list I really wish I did not have to wait another 25 years to retire. I am feeling really really old. Beanie & Cecil when they were puppets; Crusader Rabbit and Ragland (AKA " Rags) T. Tiger shown on the Sherrif " Lunch Brigade " (a Los Angeles show). For the youngsters here, Cusader Rabbit was a direct forerunner of Rocky & Bullwinkle. Party lines unless you were _really_ important; doctor house calls; relatively affordable housing ( " Vets move in with $99 down! " - and it seemed almost everyone was a vet); streets quiet enough for 2-3 innings of baseball in the street (at 4PM) between moving for a passing car; any kid's mother could chastise you (and then call your mother so you got it again when you got home); days of " The policeman is your friend " . (But there were many " not so great " things going on then, too.) Roy Mumaw CAPD Arroyo Grande
Guest guest
OMG! I remember party lines! I don't remember having one but a friend of mine did. LOL The first 8-track my sisters and I bought, we pooled our allowance(it took forever), was one that had several different songs on it but one I truely remember is " Run, , Run! " I can't even remember who sang that song. (Does anyone else?) I just remember playing it over and over again. My, oh, my I'm getting old! Tiger shown on the Sherrif " Lunch Brigade " (a Los > Angeles show). And Crusader and Rags were on very early Saturday morning in New York, right after " Modern Farmer " . It may seems strange but in the 50's and 60's WNBC TV in NYC actually ran agricultural shows such as the above plus " Agriculture USA " and " Across the Fence " . The fact that I remember them is a testament to my age and my ability to store tons of useless information. Stations also ran shows based on WWII footage such as " Victory at Sea " and " Navy Log " . Anybody remember them? So, Roy, thanks for giving a nod to Crusader and Rags. BTW, Rags middle name was " The " , and I am not making that up! " Victory at Sea " played pretty good classical music on the soundtrack (I think I used to have a 33 1/3 of Vol 5 of the music) You old enough to remember " The Big Picture " on TV? Short newsreel type footage (10-15 minutes each?) of the war in Korea. Uhh, my grandparents told me about them (yeah, that's it), along with the fact that in the summer of 1952, Beanie and Cecil (the puppet version) was pre-empted by the Democratic and Republican conventions. I much preferred Beanie over Howdy. Roy Mumaw CAPD Arroyo Grande
Guest guest
I remember buying cigarettes for $1.80 a carton, buying gas for .209 a gallon and gas wars, where the price would drop to .149 a gallon. I remember when an ambulance came, there was not first aid, just a vehicle to transport. It was always a Cadillac brand. I remember black and white restrooms and water fountains. I remember where I was when President Kennedy was killed. I remember when they announced we were going to be desegrated and our biggest question was if we could grow a mustache (the black school allowed the men to do it). We didn't have gay people or at least publicly. I remember when you could buy a Renault Dauphine brand new for $900. I rode on a Honda 50 motorbike. I had a crystal radio (no electricity to run it). The best toy was a pump up water rocket (can still be found on Ebay). TV wasn't on but a few hours a day when it first started. I remember seeing the first color TV. I also remember putting a film on the B & W TV screen to make it look like it was color. I also remember when I had hair. Enough of ramblings. Larew NC911@...
