Guest guest
I don't know about that, and I can't put my hand on the studies right now, but there have been several that recommend diabetics take ACE inhibitors to help protect our kidneys. I take meds for high bp anyway, so my doc had adjusted meds to include Monopril. At the time, I was also taking Inderal LA, a beta blocker for migraine prevention. My neuro changed me to something else for migraine prevention, and I asked to be taken off the beta blocker because they're not good for asthmatics and can make allergic reactions worse. Unfortunately, when he tapered down the beta blocker dosage and tapered up the ACE Inhibitor dosage, I developed the most common ACE side effect, the annoying dry cough. Bottom line, according to my doc, is that even with other bp meds, a low dose of an ACE inhibitor does protect our kidneys. Teri ACE inhibitors and pain / diabetes etc. I also read somewhere on the internet which I, unfortunately, can't remember now, that all diabetics should be treated as heart patients. Teri there is a class of bp meds that have the same benefits as ACE inhibitors, they are angiotension , they do not have the coughing side effects, but will protect your diabetic kidneys, many endo's are going for these right off to side step the ACE side effects. carol ---------------------------------
Guest guest
Thanks for the info, Carol. I have a checkup this month, and will talk to my doc about them. ACE stands for angiotensin-converting enzyme. I think Carol is referring to the second-generation ACE inhibitors. Two ACE inhibitors in particular I've seen do well in tests are Quinapril and Ramipril. Susie
