Guest guest
Hi to all newly dignosed and/or newly subscribed to this list. I will give you the story of my own diagnosis. I was told I had diabetes on 4/29/01. At the time I weighed 180 lbs and had no symptoms of the disease - it was discovered through a blood test during my yearly physical. Since no one in my family has ever had this disease I was shocked but decided I would do my best to learn to live with it. I was put on Glucatral XR. My readings dropped down into the 40's. I was taken off (about 10 days later) and put on Glucaphoge XL - my readings continued to be way below comfort levels. My Dr. said if I lose some weight I won't need drugs. I started a new eating regime (I don't call it a diet because I still pretty much eat what I want). I changed from real Coke to Diet Coke, started eating more proteins than starches and more fruit and veggies as well. Today I am 35 lbs lighter and my readings never exceed 140. I eat sweets on occassion and don't eat anything remotely resembling a " balanced died " . Just eat less and better overall. My dr. said that, if I can stay under 150 all the time, I may not need meds for years (thank goodness) if ever. I feel better, look better and don't mind the changes in my eating habits at all. Take your disease one day at a time and concentrate on eating better and losing weight. You will control the disease -- it will not control you -- by taking some simple steps to better living.
